All autumn competitions have now finished with a number of Senior and Junior teams winning flags (for details refer to the various reports in the Newsletter). Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the runners up! The annual Championships held in March were again an unqualified success and enjoyed by the participating members. A big thank-you to the organising team and helpers. Night Tennis proves to be the most popular competition at our club. We are entering a record 26 teams in the Spring 2009 season. To ensure all teams playing at home can sit comfortably inside after their matches an additional table for the clubhouse has been ordered. Another fridge has been purchased so that everyone can "adequately" store their supper plates and drinks. Based on the light-weight composition of the shelves in the new fridge we will designate it as ‘food only’ and request that all drinks be stored in the existing fridge due to the heaviness of such items. The upgrade of court number 3 is getting closer and a decision on the winning contractor will be made in the next few weeks. We envisage the court to be ready for play before Christmas this year. At the time of printing we are still awaiting the outcome of our joint submission with the Banyule City Council to Sports & Recreation Victoria for tripartite funding to upgrade courts 4 to 7. Please put the date of the AGM, Thursday, 30 July in your diary. Come along to the clubhouse at 7.30 pm and let the committee know what you think or how you can assist us. The Committee is always looking for new ideas on how to improve things for all club members. Dietmar Mueller ^Back to the top
Ladies: Of our nine ladies teams, five made it to the semi finals: sections 4(2), 5, 13, 14 and 16. Sections 4, 5. and 13 won through to the grand final. Congratulations to sect 4 and 5 for winning their respective grand finals. Players were: * Sect. 4 - Heather Capuana, Lucy Waddingham, Diana Tominc, Rhonda Grisold, Trish Sando and Kath Byrne; Next season we are entering eight teams with the sect 13 girls taking a season out, but returning the following season. Mixed Doubles: Six teams were entered in this popular competition, three made it to the semi finals: sections 1, 2 and 3. Sections 2 and 3 won through to the grand final and both teams were runners up. Well done to these teams. Lucy Waddingham Ladies/Mixed Night Tennis Coordinator Mens: We entered a record 11 men’s teams this season with two men’s (Sections 3 and 4) and two vets teams (Vets 7 and Vets 8) making it through to the semi finals. Three teams won through to the grand final - Sect 7 vets, sect 8 vets and sect 4 men’s. All were runners up in their respective grand finals. Well done to all these teams. It appears we will be entering 12 men’s teams next season, which will make the facilities in our clubhouse very tight. We attempted to hire courts elsewhere but were unsuccessful. The number of entries each season must be capped at 12 because of this pressure. Any prospective men’s teams will have to wait for an opening to be created through the withdrawal of another team. NEXT SEASON: Commences August 4, 5 and 6. Please remember that pick up of balls, cards and fixtures is Sunday 2 August between 3-4pm at the clubhouse. Please make sure a member of each team attends and payment of the $230.00 team fees is due on the day. Grant Waddingham Men’s Night Tennis Coordinator During the season, night competition ladders can be viewed at www.vicnet.net.au/~nentg
Well it's been another great season for the juniors at View Bank. The Autumn 2009 season saw View Bank enter 22 teams into the NEJTA competition. Eight teams, namely the Girls7 red, 9, 11 and the Boys 5, 7, 9, 13 and 18, made the finals. Of these, the Boys 5 and 9 and the Girls 9 and 11 won their way through the semi finals to the grand final of their respective sections. Congratulations to the following players who were successful on the day: * Girls 9 Stephanie Tieppo, Trelawny Hand, Zoe Beer and Loretta Snipe; Next season we have entered 19 teams into the competition and will again be using the Yallambie and Banyule venues. We have tried as much as possible to rotate the teams around these out side venues but with the movement of players within the grades it has not been possible to fixture all players who played at an out side venue last season back to the View Bank home courts. Finally I would like to thank all the team managers who supported our junior program this season by coordinating their respective teams. You all did a great job. I would also like to pay special thanks to Jenny Brown and Peter and Sue Nolan for again making a great contribution to the junior program at View Bank and in particular their coordination of the club championships which were a resounding success. Chris Chandler Junior Secretary
For the first time in many seasons, View Bank did not contest a grand final. View Bank and View Bank Blue met each other in the Section 3 semi final with View Bank falling short the following week in the preliminary final. The Section 9 team charged into the finals on percentage after a slow start to their season and reached the preliminary final. The widely unpopular later starting time of 10am has been abandoned. The starting time for the upcoming Spring season will return to the earlier starting time of 9.30am. Next season starts Tuesday 14 July and due to the reduced number of teams entered, the association will compromise ten sections. There will again be two teams in Section 3 and one team in Section 8. Barbara Carpenter MWL Secretary
Well once again the finals have been played and the summer has been put to rest. No matter what the season tells us the roughies always seem to get up. The Cockroaches were outplayed by the Ants in the first semi with Paul Petridis substituting for the captain John Annat Then the Mossies cleaned up the Rats with Gary Fulvio substituting for the captain Dietmar Mueller. What does this tell us about the fortitudes of the Captains (not to mention the ineptitude of the substitute selectors)? Anyway congratulations to the Ants - Mario Carafa, Trevor Knoll, Paul Petridis and of course that champion transferred from the Ville de Lille David Baldet! They won from 4th place with the captain John Annat coaching from the sidelines and even going out on the court during the final set (I'm sure this is against the rules). Commiserations to Ron Tucker, Dietmar Mueller, Freddie Kleinert and Norberto Santa Juliana. Freddie Kleinert was heard complaining that there should be age handicaps or bonuses and I'm sure Roy Kennedy and Ron Tucker agreed with him at the end, I know I did. Thanks to Gordon Chan for another stirring rendition of the national anthem and to Carmen and Freddie for organising the trophies and the supper. I also want to take the opportunity on behalf of all the players to thank John O'Brien for his stalwart organising once again. Rod Caple We welcome the following new members to our Club! Fundraising Thank you to all members who have been presenting their Community Support Card at Danaher’s Mitre 10 Heidelberg and earning valuable credits for the club. Over the past year we have collectively clocked up over $3,700 in purchases – the second highest level of credits. We are well placed to receive “top-5” bonuses and a cash rebate of approximately $190. 2009 Entertainment Books are still available from Annie Hand and Jenny Brown (0414594793). Once again you can get great value at eateries and other venues whilst helping raise funds for our club. The books are still only $65.
