Picture and Art Collections A select collection of paintings and pictures have recently been professionally hung. They look wonderful gracing our walls and we extend a warm welcome to you to view them. Of particular interest are our paintings dating from the 1860s which document the changes to the foreshore, particularly the bathing boxes, and our photo collection of past local sporting heroes (maybe even an ancestor of yours) including the 1919 women's premiership cricket team and the Henty family cricketers of 1894. Brighton has been the home of many women artists and amongst our collection are works by Jessie Traill, Norah Gurdon, the sisters, Jessie and Ethel Evans, and Margaret Baskerville, Victoria's first professional woman sculptor. Her well-known statute of Sir Thomas Bent, nine times Mayor of Brighton, stands proudly next to his wife's memorial, on the corner of Bay Street and Nepean Highway, Brighton. Both collections are presently being catalogued. Sandra Lanteri
