Training & Courses The Victorian Branch Abseiling Council provides training of youth members and adults in the recreational sport of abseiling. This training encompasses two main areas:
Experiance One of the roles of the VBAC is to give the membership of Victorian Scouts the opportunity of experiencing the sport of Abseiling in a safe, cheap, controlled environment utilising both man-made structures and natural cliff faces. Leader Training The other main role is to provide
an avenue for the training of Adult Leaders and youth members
to become competent Skills Leaders, Abseil Guides or Participants
(old Assistants levle) to allow them to conduct Abseiling activities.
The training role is gaining a new importance with the new National
Scout Adventurous Activities requirements for uniform training
standards for outdoor based activities. The VBAC has provided
a standardised training program for the sport since the units
formation and the course content is becoming more widespread
with development and the inclusion of elements required to match
the National Scout Standards requirements. The various levels within for Activity Leaders within the VBAC are: Participant (formally Assistant Leader):- normally a youth member or an adult undertaking the first steps in Abseiling Leadership. This position is only recognised in Victoria and is not a National Standard. However, it is applicable as part of the youth members award scheme. Abseiling Guide:- (this includes the Skills Leader and the Guide artifical or natural surface this is an Adult Member (over 18 years of age) who can conduct and run Abseiling Activities. This course is Nationally recognised. The course undertaken will be reconised both within and outside of scouting within the Abseiling skill set. Activity Leader - Abseiling:- this is also an Adult Member, the principal role of the leader in charge of the abseil activity at a given venue or occasion. Within the core teams this is the base for Instructor/Assessor in Training of new Abseiling leaders and the maintenance of the standards and quality of our Leaders. The Instructor/Assessor is
generally accepted as having an in-depth knowledge of the sport
of Abseiling and has completed or is currently undertaking the
Train the Trainer program (levels 1 to 4). Once they have completed
the courses they are normally granted the Adult Instructor qualification
and may then participate in the Adult Assessor training and then
may be admitted into the National Training Register. These are
training roles which are nationally recognised with qualifications
both within and outside of scouting.
