Fencers are graded as follows:
| Ungraded | Fencers who have not placed in the top 3 of any graded event. |
| C-grade | Fencers who have placed 2nd or 3rd in a C-grade event. |
| B-grade | Fencers who have won a C-grade, or placed 2nd or 3rd in a B-grade |
| A-grade | Fencers who have won a B-grade, placed 2nd or 3rd in an A-grade, or placed in the top 12 of a national competition. |
Only competitions with at least the minimum number of 6 entrants are used
to grade fencers. A competition that has only 5 entrants will not promote the winner to
the next grade.
Grading is seperate for each weapon, so a fencer who is promoted to A-grade epee may still be
a C-grade foilist and an ungraded sabreur.
State rankings start afresh each calendar year, results are not cycled.
Ranking is based on points. Points are awarded based on competition results.
Only VAFA graded events contibute to your state ranking. (ie: Open, A, B or C grades)
All VAFA affiliated fencers who participate in these competitions are included in the rankings.
Points earned depend on three things. The number of people in the event, your final
place in the event, and the difficulty of the competition.
The person who wins the event will get a number of points equal to the number of entrants, N.
Second place will recieve N-1 points, Third place N-2 points and so on, until the last placed
fencer who gets 1 point.
These points are then multipled by a difficulty factor:
These are open to all fencers who have full Senior or Junior VAFA affiliation.
These are open to all B, C and Ungraded fencers who have full or novice VAFA affiliation.
These are open to all C and Ungraded fencers who have full or novice VAFA affiliation.
These are open to all fencers with full or novice VAFA affiliation, but they must have been under the specified age on January 1st of this year. (ie: If they turned 17 in January they are still eligible for U17 events, but not if they turned 17 on December 31st).
Veteran events are open to fencers who were 40 years or older on January 1st of this year.
Every member of the team must be fully affiliated with VAFA, and be affiliated through
the club they are representing.
Composite teams are allowed, but they can't claim the title of "state champions".
To compete in a VAFA competition you need to be affiliated with VAFA. The only exceptions are:
Fencers in these categories are more than welcome to visit and compete in whichever competitions are appropriate for their skill level. Their name and home state or country will appear in the results, but they will not be included in the state rankings.
All fencers in VAFA competitions must adhere to the minimum equipment requirements.
All equipment must be in good condition. If any item of equipment is deemed by the referee
or DT to be unsafe, the fencer may not use it and must find a suitable replacement.
The minimum requirements for VAFA events are:
Notes:
1. Tracksuit pants are permitted in place of breeches for Novice and Junior events.
2. Wearing a plastron is also recommended.
3. FIE standard equipment is required for all AFF events, and recommended for VAFA events.
The club listed for DT for the various events will be contacted by the VAFA Tournament Secretary during the week prior to the event. Entry and affiliation lists, DT report forms, and medals will be supplied.
There is a 'How to DT' booklet which should be kept in the VAFA DT office. This answers many frequently asked questions. You can also download a copy from the Documents section of this website.
It is recommended that the club/group rostered for DT organise a snack bar for the day of the competition. Whilst this is an optional duty, with all proceeds going to the organising club/group, it would no doubt be greatly appreciated by the all fencers and spectators present on the day.
