Barbara
Wolters & Darren Wardle Galerie Treppenhaus, Ubhf.Steglitz, Berlin 9 October 1998, 6-8 pm, EST Both artists work with the photographic image and its relationship to site. Although both trained as painters, their main concern in the last years has been the reproduction of the image through technical aids. Barbara and Darren communicated regularly with long gaps in between but, to their surprise, on a very intuitive level. Both used images from their immediate environment, manipulated them and (re)presented them in a sequel. A personal diary is woven into the storyline through manipulated image only visible for the artists themselves. We as the viewer, nevertheless, are aware of the very intimate thread woven through. Both works are site-specific and capture the oddness and foreignness of the stairwell as an unknown site beautifully. Stairwell Public Office, West Melbourne 9 October 1998 Strip: The extreme length of the strip was meant to correspond in some physical way to the length of the journey. The horizontal use of the imagery intended to resist the comprehension of the piece in one view. Grid: The final product of a kommuting matrix of both components.
