Para/Site was founded as a Not for Profit independent art space by seven artists in 1996, in response to the perceived limitations of the existing commercial system in Hong Kong. It is located in Sheung in a shop space 150m square. Para/Site is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and now has a second space housed at the Hanart TZ gallery which focuses on young, local artists. It also promotes publications, forums and seminars and was instrumental in setting up the independent Art Space conference in association with West Space in Melbourne. Para/Site also publishes a tri-monthly bilingual art magazine.

The aim of this artist-run space is to promote contemporary visual art to the community of Hong Kong. Para/Site is a showcase for art and also a generator of cultural activities. The production of artifacts, exhibitions, curating, discussions, criticism, publication, research and education is seen as a cohesive program. The Board of Directors includes artists, architects, a university professor and an art consultant. There are one full-time and three part-time staff.
