C Grade Season Wrap

Unley’s 3rd X1 competed in C1 grade of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association competition in season 2006/07. There were 12 teams in this grade. Along with Unley’s 3rd X1 there were six other clubs’ thirds, 2 clubs’ fourths, 2 club’s B grades and Gaza’s A grade. Even though this was meant to be a two-day competition, we ended up having 4 of the 11 games scheduled as one-dayers.We won half of the 10 minor round games that were played and there was a game abandoned due to the heat policy.

Briefly then, the season produced some interesting stats from our 5 wins and 5 losses:

Our batting was consistent (while not setting the world on fire) with Murph recording the highest individual score of 84no. There were 6 other players to score 50s – the Whale, the Claw, Jay Lo, Nugget, Harry and Mars. Unfortunately, only two of these 7 were able to accumulate more than 200 runs for the season. As a team, we scored just under 2,000 runs in the 14 innings we played, which works out to an average of 138 runs per innings. We scored more than 200 runs only twice in those 14 innings with our highest score being 7/246 in round 9. Our lowest score was in round 3 when we were bundled out for 79 by SPOC. We avoided being beaten outright in rounds 2, 3 & 4 and had only one realistic chance of winning outright and that was in round 9 against Flinders Uni.

Our bowling attack was down a bit compared to last season with only one player taking more that 20 wickets for the season. (Last year we had 3 players and as a result we ended up playing in the finals). Our bowlers took 95 wickets for the season, while conceding just over 2,300 runs in the 13 innings they bowled, which works out to around a wicket every 25 runs.

There were a couple of personal milestones reached this season:

Brett (give’m the single) Murphy achieved ATCA 15yr life membership.

Tony Fiore became the Club’s leading run scorer in round 10 when he surpassed Gary Zerna’s record aggregate of 5,348 runs.

Lawrie Marshall played his 200th game for the Club in round 11 and had the pleasure of having his son Scott play his first senior game for the Club in the same game. Scotty asked me to point out that he doubled his father’s score that day (4 v 2).

One of the closest games I’ve ever played in also turned out to be a highlight of the season where we won the game on the last ball of the day by bowling out Hectorville one run short of their target of 128 off 40 overs in round 8.

In summary therefore, we had a poor start to the season losing 4 out of the first 5 games, but we came good in the second half winning 4 out of the last 5 and I guess you could put that down to the Club struggling with numbers early on. I would like to thank all 35 players who played for the C grade this season for their support and enthusiasm – I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

I would like to thank Bill Kay for once again preparing the wicket at Unley High. I would also like to thank Paul Barrett for umpiring all but one of the games we played this season. It’s amazing how much difference it makes to have a consistently good, independent umpire every week. All the other clubs we played against also took advantage of Paul’s services and I didn’t receive any complaints from any of the opposing captains, which is a credit to Paul’s ability and impartiality.
