Round 3 V Hope Valley at Hope Valley

We traveled down to the scenic Hope Valley Oval to take on the top of the table Jeff Vaughan Demons. The playing surface rivaled Adelaide Oval (pre 1854) and we batted first. Bort opened up and did his best impersonation of an Olympic sprinter to run himself out in the first few overs (it was a direct hit), this bought Cots to the crease and he looked at ease, the total opposite of his partner, Pup who copped a few to the upper groin. Cots went for 17, Stink came and went for 8 and The Fridge Nolan with Pup (The Natural Brazilian) went about restoring some respectability to the score card. The boys saw us over the 100 run mark before The Cool Room was caught in the deep for 46, this bringing in Magnum PI (Rossco) who was looking nervous after scores of 0 and 0. A huge roar erupted when Ross worked one through slips to score a run, Pup went for a hard working 39 and Shane (Don’t tell Tyson) Williams also went quickly. First gamer Terry Perry (who has nicknamed himself Moose) came in and with Magnum pushed to score closer the 200 mark, unfortunately Tom Selleck Jr was bowled for 42, Moose ending up 17 not out and Zaco 2 not out. We ended our 50 overs at 7/198 and ready for afternoon tea, but to the rich Unley boys a squashed fritz and off sauce sandwich didn’t stretch too far. Oh to the spoilt offerings from Kingswood Oval.

We opened up with Slammin Willy and A Grade debutant Fred Frittam. Both boys bowled well with Ftitz picking up his first A Grade wicket early. A long partnership was formed with Rossco bowling nicely without any luck. A couple of dropped catches caused a few headaches and Hope Valley was in control. In come spinners Zaco and Moose who stemmed the tide and picked up 3 wickets and we were back in the contest. A few overs later their captain edged a couple of sixes and The Valley were in sight of the win, then Rossco took a wicket and we had them 5/180ish . They passed the score in the 46th over and then went on for a bit of a slap. Wazza who was devastated their were no pies served at afternoon tea decided to serve them to The Valleys batsmen to end up with 1/55 of 8 overs, Willy (who was unlucky) ending up 0/37, Fritz 1/31 in a good debut, Rossco (who was the pick of the mediums) 1/41 and spinners Moose 1/25 of 7 and Zac 2/42 of 8 (which included 22 of one over). All in all we didn’t bowl well enough to our fields, we dropped a few chances and didn’t exert enough pressure on the batsmen, all things we will strive to do this week against Flinders Park.

Round 2 vs Kilburn at Kilburn

Round 2 for Unley involved a trip to Kilburn to take on the other combatants of last seasons tied grand final. The side had a distinctively new feel with as many changes as the Redbacks batting line up. Four changes in total all of them forced. Out from last week was Andrew Pup Caire off to watch the Cox Plate, Michael Grassy Nolan wedding commitments, Zac Scrotum Treloar party on the Eyre Peninsula and big Wazza unable to come up after getting the uphill bowling duties last week. Into the side the dirty whore Nick Hussey, Big Honky Tonk Tonkin rewarded for a fine 70 in the B’s last week, Iron Mike Tyson Smith and Steve Scotty Brennan. Congratulations to both Mike and Tonk for there A Grade debuts. Scotty Brennan was called up to trial the gloves on Thursday night and immediately put in the A’s.

The week had a distinctively normal feel for the four players from last years GF, Stink lost the toss and on a 35-degree day we were asked to bowl. From there on it wasn’t a great day – bowling generally ok, fielding quite poor and Kilburn posted 282. At tea they were 4/130 and shortly after 5/140 and could have been worse but for some early drop catches. The pitch settled down to be a road later in the day and Kilburn pasted us late in the afternoon. Some good bowling performances led by the Himbo Rossco with 5/65 of 20 overs, Shane took 3/59 of 19 overs and CT the other two with 2/45 of 15. Iron Mike in A Grade debut bowled well without luck 0/48 of 12, Swifty who was crook 0/10 of 4 and Burts 0/36 of 9.

We rocked up on the second day for our massive chase to see a cool day with no sun in the sky and forecasts of rain. Stink opened with Cots and they got of to a pretty good start before Stink held out to mid on with the score at 20. After that a procession of wickets fell Tonks on debut for 8, Umar for 6 and Rossco picking up his second duck in a row with one more to equal Cameron Borgas’ week for the Redbacks. Big Willy came and survived the hat-trick ball. Shano and Cots then started a rescue mission and put on 49 seeing of marathon spells from both opening bowlers and we were 4/80. The change of bowlers brought a procession of wickets – Cots after five consecutive strikes was out Leg Before to the sixth ball for a scratchy 40. Shano after looking comfortable got a full toss from the spinner and hit it straight to the fielder for 26. Burts came and went with the exact replica of last weeks dismissal, Huss let the spinner bowl him, Mike Tyson chopped one on and we were 9/120. Some late hitting from Scotty Brennan got us to tea at 9/150. Unfortunately the rain didn’t come during the interval and two overs later we were all out for 162 with Scotty’s cameo of 31 ending leaving Robin red ink swift undefeated again.

Kilburn took the opportunity to send us back in. At this time a massive dust storm had started. Visibility was poor and gale winds blowing the sightscreens all over the place. Tonks and Cots opened up and after 15 overs we were 0/82. Honky Tonk hit his first A Grade 50 hopefully more to come and Cots looked in control for an undefeated 26 highlighted by laying bat on the first ball from the first change bowler. The game was then called of for bad light and the one highlight of the day we got to take home last year’s premiership shield.

A Grade Round 1 V Para Hills

Round 1 of the 2007/08 season and we played Para Hills in our return to the A2 division, after two seasons in A3. The first game of the year saw 3 changes from the team, which tied last year’s grand final. Out from the side was Tom Roden (on a yearlong ultimate Frisbee world tour), Dan Ainscough retiring from the A’s to captain the B’s (in search of more chances to bat) and Hayden Daley working interstate. Also missing this year Greg Vaughan who is on a yearlong missionary sabbatical after missing the grand final due breaking his arm in a bike riding accident two days before the day. Back into the side this year comes the returning Ross The Himbo Nicholson (who was overseas modelling socks) and hopefully appeasing the female fans that will miss Tom Rodens. Robin B Swift who missed last season due to a knee reconstruction and former junior cricketer of the year Shane Rob Dog Williams.

To complete the new feel for the season Stinky Windman won the toss and we had first use of a very good Kingswood wicket. Opening the batting was Stink and Fine Cotton. Cots left early, the former Former Child Rock Star Andrew Caire followed shortly afterwards. Umar Terry joined the skipper and they put on 80 before CT was out for 37. Michael Grassy Nolan joined Stink and they were going along nicely until he ran out the skipper for a well made 62. The Himbo followed shortly after for a duck before Shane Robbie Williams in his first A Grade game joined the crease. Grassy proceeded to atone for the run out smacking a few sixes before being adjudged LBW for 48. Robbie eventually got of the mark after 24 balls (and in the process being given out LBW only for the ump to change his mind) added 25 with Burts before Burts planted his size 9 Julius Marlow in front of middle and was given out in his trademark way, LBW. Zac Scrotum Treloar followed next ball and we were in trouble at 8/190. Swifty joined Shano and produced his trademark impenetrable defense and added 30 runs with Shane before Shane was out LBW for 40. Big Wazza came and went quickly leaving Swifty stranded on 2. All out for 228, with a 5 wicket haul from an interesting medium pace bowler who (in his team-mates opion) would be unlikely to take any further wickets this season. Para Hills had 10 overs to bat at the end day, Wazza opened up with Swifty and at the end of the day were 0/38 and taking the upper hand into week 2.

The second week saw Shane Robbie Williams start off down hill with the oldest man of the side Wazza forced to come uphill and into the wind for the first time in many many seasons. Robbie took a very early wicket to get things underway. Another partnership formed before Rossco was introduced and they were 2/60. A Run Out with a direct hit from 3 quarters to the boundary from Willo put them 3/90. Another wicket to CT followed and Para Hills went into the tea break around 4/130 and still on top. After the tea break Waz took a couple of wickets and Shane also added a couple to his tally to have Para Hills struggling at 8/180. A frustrating partnership of 25 followed before Swifty broke through and then Rossco immediately followed up with the final wicket. Shane had an excellent debut taking 3/30 of 17 overs to go with his 40 runs, Wazza 2/68, Rossco 2/45, CT 1/19, Swifty 1/11 and Zac bowled 14 tidy overs for 0/21. A good alround bowling performance.

We batted again and ended up at 1/54, capping off a good win to start the season . Many thanks to the C grade boys for there encouraging support after getting back to the club just after the tea break to enjoy some two dollar beers.

Next match sees us take on our nemesis from last year’s grand final tie Kilburn at Kilburn.

BGrade
Unley vs Reynalla at Reynalla (unedited)

The B Grade traveled to Reynalla for the clubs first ever experience of playing on the newly laid Reynalla wickets. We arrived to see a very good pitch. Out from last weeks game was Saff unable to pull up from a big day out hangover, Tyson Smith promoted to the A’s and Tom Humphries and Todd Owen. Coming into the side Brad Hoggy Bown after attending his sisters Australia Day Wedding (very un-australian to have a wedding on Australia Day). Alex Matushik an under 17 came in for his first B Grade game. Burts promoted from his stint in the D’s and Alex Odlum available again. After 20 minutes of analyzing what to call at the toss Dan actually won and we elected to bat.

Opening the batting was James killer Quire and Brad Hoggy Bown. They blunted the new ball for 10 overs before Killer overestimated his athletic ability and was run out by half the pitch for 5. Hoggy went a couple of balls later for 4 and we were 2/10. This reunited Dan Snoozer Ainscough and Colin Edgar-Hughes who put on 141 last game. They put on another fantastic partnership this time Snoozer much more aggressive than Colin. It appeared that Colin after breaking his bat last week had picked put a $5 Double Scoop out of an op-shop and proceeded to hit the ball like he did as an under 13 player in the 80’s. After a partnership of 122 Snoozer was dismissed for a well made 72. Snoozer later admitted he was getting really tired and that the iron man Colin had simple outlasted him. Ods came in and with mass confusion was Run Out for a Duck. Burts was next in and put on 56 with Colin before self destructing for 28. Colin now feeling the pinch a good 45 minutes after Snooze was out got out for 83 and the score was 6/204. Another good innings from him and his third fifty of the season. Over the remaining 9 overs we put on 50 for the loss of 3 more wickets for an excellent 9/254 against the third side. The later order hitting highlighted by Steve Sightscreen Brennan 13, The tush Alex matushik in his first B Grade game was the closest of any batsman to hit a 6 on this large ground hit 15. Big Moff slapped a couple of boundaries in the last over for 9 not out and Nathan Beetle Crossman getting red ink again for 3 not out.

The second week was a nice cool day a great day for bowling. We nearly lost a few players before the start of the day with Burts forgetting to pick up Beetle and the ensuing confusion caused an accident that nearly took him and the skipper out of action. However, we all arrived at the ground on time. Josh Dougy Stevens regalled us with his accident the previous day. Where he was sitting at traffic lights banging his head to his loud techno music trying to impress the chick in the car next door where he knocked the seat latch falling sharply backwards and putting his foot on the accelerator and slamming into the car in front. Opening the bowling this week was the Sightscreen after being fifth change the previous week and Dan took the captains prerogative of opening up the hill into the wind. Sightscreen took a wicket in the first over to have them 1/0. In the second over Snooze got an inside edge and Dougy grabbed a blinder down the leg side and as the team began to celebrate it fell from his grasp. A couple overs later Snooze got his man with Odds plucking a good catch and the next over Killer Quire plucked one at square leg of sightscreen to leave them at 3/6. A partnership followed with them taking the score to 69 when the Big Moff got the main scorer caught down the leg side. Another partnership eventuated and they went to tea at 4/116. Straight after tea mayhem ensued Sightscreen back in the attack took three quick wickets to have them 7/123. The Beetle bowling his leggies from the other end grapped a couple and they were 9/137. A tenth wicket partnership of 65 then followed with the number nine batsman smashing 65 not out and just as we were starting to panic the big Moff grabbed the final wicket. Reynalla all out for 202. The bowling figures Snooze got o/11 of a miserly 10 overs, Big Moff 2/42 of 14, Alex Evens Matushik ( We had two Alex’s fielding on the leg side one was Odd so Matushik was labeled evens) 0/15 of 7 bowled very well on debut, Burts 0/22 of 6, Beetle 2/46 of 12 got some late stick from there no 9 batsman but the pick of the bowlers and man of the match Steve Sightscreen Brennan with 5/63 of 22 also received some late stick. A great job from the Boys two in a row looking for 3 against Walkerville at Kingswood next week.

Round 8, Unley vs Ingle Farm at Kingswood

The B’s took on Ingle Farm last week, with only 1 win separating us from the Farmers, who were the 2nd bottom team. Danny had cobbled together a makeshift team this week, after losing his top 3 batsmen from the previous match (Prime, Hussey & Tonkin) to family commitments, random drinking injuries & promotion, as well as Odds & Beachy to holidays. The fresh faces in the team were James Quire & Tom Humphries from the juniors, whilst the not so fresh faces included were Moff, Beetle & Saf (me)…

Dan won the toss & we batted, on a pitch which had a bit of life, due to some rain the night before. James & I were the new opening partnership & both of us struggled, but fought hard to hang around.I was out-classed by the in swing bowler (clean bowled for 4), whilst the same fate befell James (1) an over later from the other end.Things were looking a bit perilous at 2/12, but the old wise heads of Cam ‘Hyphen/Fatty’ Hughes and Snooze Ainscough steadied the ship.Initially both began quietly, but it wasn’t long before they’d seized the advantage and were scoring freely.

When Cam was finally dismissed after lunch for a fine 68, we’d moved on to 3/140, in what was a super partnership with Danny. Tom came & was caught flashing for 2, Joshy was adjudged LBW for 4 soon after & when Tyson was dismissed for 6 the match was evenly poised. Danny eventually fell for a patient 59 & it was left to Scuba Steve (15) & Moff (14) to build the total, while Todd didn’t add to the score. Nath was left stranded on 3* which had pushed us up to a competitive 209 all out.Ingle Farm then took the soft option and decided not to bat (which was probably a good move because T’O was fired up after his globe & probably would have killed someone), which meant we had to wait for the 2nd week to have a go at them.

The 2nd week came and was a perfect day for batting, with just a gentle breeze, no clouds and a top of 34, it was always going to be a hard slog. Dan spoke to us about being pumped up in the early session, and the chatter was great from ball 1, mind you, this was just Cam, engaging in 4 conversations at once.We opened up with T’O and T’S (Todd & Tyson), and both bowled beautifully early. It was no surprise when Tyson got the early breakthrough, whilst neither batsman had much idea at all what was happening when Todd was bowling.

Danny, and then Moff continued where the openers left off, as Snooze rotated the 4 quicks in short spells. Backing up the tight bowling, the fielding was excellent, Nath Crossman’s ‘fake left, break right, duck back & wave arms frantically whilst stopping the ball’ manoeuvre being a particular highlight of mine.Joshy took an incredible 1 hander, diving in front of Cam, but the only other comment to make, was that the bowling was consistently good, with all the boys bowling in the corridor, beating the bat regularly and never letting a big partnership form.

Stevey Brennan didn’t get a bowl until the 50th over of the day, but in the end this probably worked perfectly.. As the rest of the boys were beginning to feel the heat & Ingle Farm had crept their way to 7/150 ish, Steve came on to bowl 2 very important spells, the first one claimed 2 wickets, whilst the 2nd one was tight & containing.Ingle Farm’s last pair had pushed the total to within sight of victory. With 4 overs to go, they required 16 runs, we’d run out of ideas as to how to get them out. But on the last ball of Scuba’s 10th over, they made the mistake of bunting the ball back down the pitch and running. Scuba swooped on the ball and put a nice low throw into Joshy, who calmly broke the stumps to ensure victory.A 14 run win, with lots of character shown. Tyson, Moff, Snooze and Scuba all claimed 2 wickets apiece, with Todd & Beetle missing out.

All in all a fine win for the boys, and more importantly this ensures we stay up in B2 for next year…. Good stuff..

Round 6 vs Modbury at Kingswood

The last round before Christmas saw the B’s take on Modbury at home. On what was a slightly damp morning, Snooze won the toss & we had a bat. Snooze pointed out to the boys, this was a good toss to win, as having played at Kingswood many times, the pitch would pay better than you would expect. I was highly dubious, clearly this man is an idiot!!! Anyways, he wanted 2 things from us 1. To bat the 80 overs & 2. Make a score of 200 +

The Hussinator & Hoggy opened up, and the ball did seam around just a little early, both looked solid until Huss played an uncharacteristic pull shot & was well caught at mid-off (yes… mid off!) for 4.

The Iceman then joined the Mexican Jumping Bean at the crease & immediately dropped anchor. Brad went for 12 after seeing out about the same number of overs & Odds joined the captain at the crease.

Both batsmen looked pretty settled, but Alex got caught slashing for 22 to give me my first B grade bat in 8 years.. Dan had looked rock solid against the opening bowlers, so it was some surprise when his middle stump was taken out by the young first change bowler, while checking out the seagulls. Dan had made 24 and until that point had looked rock solid.

Joshy then joined me at the crease & we managed to hold out until the lunch break at around 5/90. I reckon i had about 5 from 150 balls at that stage. At the break, Josh & I had decided we’d bat as long as possible… unfortunately this probably ended up only being 5 overs, as Junior was dismissed for 13. We were looking down the barrel of a low score at this stage… But Burts was next in, he strode to the crease & immediately said to me ‘these are my sort of bowlers’… He then proceeded to back up that claim by smashing the Modbury bowlers to all parts. In the end it took a leg spinner bowling around the wicket with a 7-2 field to dismiss him, By that stage though, we’d had a 64 run partnership (of which I contributed a sparkling 11), and Burts had made a highly entertaining 50.

Iron Mike then came & went, I dollied back a caught & bowled to be dismissed for a Tavere'-esque 26 & Beachy & Todd both imploded leaving Stevey Brennan undefeated on 8.

We were dismissed for 180 in 71.4 overs, so we hadn’t quite achieved either of our objectives, although the captain wasn’t totally displeased at the end of the days play.

Week 2 unfortunately saw a washout… Which was a bit of a shame, because the match was evenly poised. Lots of starts there but only 1 score past 50, plenty to work on in the new year.

Goodsaf (with special comments from Snoozer)

Round 3 vs Adelaide High OS at Kingswood

Round 3 arrived and we were to take on top of the table AHOS with both sides undefeated this season. With week one being washed the game turned into a one-dayer. After seven changes the previous game we took a slightly more settled side into this week’s game with only 6 changes. Out from last week Fritz and Moose both promoted for there first A grade game, Cairey returning to the A’s, Moods in search of greater pain killing medicine, Benny Barratt back to the one-dayers (knowing too well he cannot repeat last weeks performance) and the Big Rigs unavailable this week. Coming into the side were The Whore Nick Hussey, Mike Tyson Smith and Burts from the A’s. Beachy and the Hyphen Cameron Edgar-Hughes again were available and Party (who got over the disappointment of his previous rounds dropping) all returned. The Veteran Dan Ainscough won the toss and decided to bat on a very flat looking Unley deck. The Whore opened up with Brad Hoggy Bown and both were back in the pavilion after 16 runs. Alex Evens Odlum followed shortly afterwards and we were 3/33. This bought two of the oldest men in the side in The Veteran and The Hyphen (However, there combined ages is quite close to the next oldest in the side, the senior veteran Party Pete), the experience of the men enabled them to put on a great partnership of 83 before The Veteran was unluckily caught and bowled for 39. Burts came and went (is this the new Cameron Borgas?) and then Mike Tyson joined The Hyphen. They put on 49 before Mike was out in the final few overs for 23. The Hyphen went on and was run out of the last ball of the game for 67 (He needs to run a few more fours at training as there were a few farcical run attempts in the latter overs). All up we reached 7/173.

AHOS started batting and in recent rounds had piled some quite substantial scores. Opening the bowling was Ando and Beachy. Both bowled well from the start and unfortunately a couple of catches went down off Beachy. Ando got the first couple of wickets and they were 2/23. Beachy bowled his 10 straight and was unfortunate not to pick up a few wickets and took 0/26. First change was Todd Owen and Burts both unable to pick up any wickets early and AHOS went to drinks at the halfway mark on 2/72. After drinks the bowling was left to Mike Tyson and The Veteran. Mike picked up a quick wicket and they were 3/78. This is where the match turned against us; the next 6 overs produced 60 runs with AHOS number 5 batsman slogging us to all parts of the ground. Todd and Burts came back on and Burts got the sloggers wicket for 41 (of around 15 balls). They were now 4/143. From here they passed our score with no more wickets down but we plugged away and kept them to 9/226 of their 50 overs. Ando with an impressive first spell took 3/31 of 10 overs. Todd Owen finished of the innings quite well took 3/32 of 10. Tyson took a bit of stick from the slogger but bounced back to finish with 2/62 of eight. The other wicket went to Burts with 1/36. Next week brings Flinders Park and we now realize that after impressive performances in the first few weeks the competition will get much more competitive throughout the season. AHOS are a very good side but if we can find small improvements each week we should remain competitive for the rest of the season. C Grade Match Report Round 10 vs Gaza

The penultimate round of C1 saw us take on the undefeated Gaza at Unley High. The first Saturday was an absolute stinker, with a forecast of 36 degrees & windy, we were hopeful Lard's would finally win a toss.

He duly obliged & we batted, with Saf & 'Mike (Pete) Myers' opening up. Things started in the worst possible way, with Saf gone for 0 in the first over. Brad 'Hoggy' Bown came in at number 3, and he & Pete really battled hard in the first hour. Both took a number of hits, but managed to survive some pretty good bowling from Gaza. By the time Brad was eventually dismissed for 14, the boys had put on 48 & a few of the Gaza boys were getting particularly frustrated.

This brought Gary Speak to the crease & after surviving a few scares early, He really hit his straps! Pete Myers was batting beautifully, and it was a surprise when he eventually fell for a patient 39, with a little tickle off the leg spinner.

This brought on a mini collapse, as Foxy took over Tony Fiore's mantle of 'Unlucky' and picked out Gaza's least mobile (and lippiest) fielder first ball. Reg Lapidge survived until the break & the captain suggested all the boys had to do was survive the first 10 overs or so, as Gaza was beginning to get frustrated.

After the tea break, Speaky really began to open up & a couple of his drives were superb. Reg went about 6 overs after the break for 3, but this only brought Lards to the crease. At this point Gaza was beginning to crumble, as Lards & Speaky went on the rampage.

One particular 6 Gary hit was enormous, reaching the car park at the top of Unley on the first bounce. Lards went for 17 (I hadn't realised he'd hit a single somewhere), Alex was then bowled to a peach of an in-swinger for 4, and when Beachy was dismissed for a patient 4 also, Gary Speak had hit the nervous 90's. Millsy did a job though, hanging around long enough for Gary to reach his first ever ton! (Well done mate). This appeared to piss Gaza off though, as Millsy was hit by a climber & then duly bowled next ball.

Party (4) hung around long enough for Gary to reach 128* and the team had made 235. Not bad against the top side. Week 2 came around and conditions were much more favourable for bowling, (low 20's), we all thought we were a strong chance, especially with our bowling attack.

We opened up with Millsy & Beachy and the Gaza batsmen got off to a flyer, they were followed by Saf, Alex & Lards but at the drinks break (18 overs) Gaza were 0/93.

After the break Lards decided to bowl some off-spin & the breakthrough came, as a leg side ball was missed by the charging batsman & all of a sudden the bails were off... Some say it was the incredible hand speed of Party Pete, others say it hit his pads... In the book it says stumped, so who cares!

This slowed proceedings, as Lards took it upon himself to personally beat Gaza, he bowled the next 2 batsmen (for 4 & 0), whilst at the other end Alex was bowling well, but without luck. At the tea break (which for the 2 nd successive week was sensational - well done boys) we had really fought back, with Gaza now at 3/135. Lards suggested a couple more breakthroughs and we were right in the hunt.

First ball after the break Alex was unlucky to have a catch fall inches short of Gary's out-stretched hand. But When Lards took an early wicket we were right back in it. The Gaza boys then knuckled down for a period and had moved on to 4/160ish before Millsy imposed himself on the game, claiming 2 quick wickets, including the important dismissal of the opener (Saville) for 82.

Unfortunately the game turned on its head again, we'd got Gaza to about 6/180, when Saf dropped the simplest of catches (Lards likened it to throwing a nerf ball to a 2 year old), which was soon followed by 2 more relatively easy drops (and a difficult one). The Gaza number 8 made us pay, smashing 37, ably assisted by the patient Kim Alley (ex Unley stalwart).

They comfortably eased passed us during this period & the only highlight after that was Brad Bown claiming his first wicket for the club with his wily Hoggy-esque chinamen. They finished with 7/330, Lards was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/52 off 19. The other successful bowlers were Millsy with 2/62 & Brad with 1/22, while both Alex & Beachy bowled very well, without any luck.

Disappointing end but some real fight shown in periods. 1 game to go... Let's have some fun.

Saf.

C Grade Match Report Round 7 vs Golden Grove at Home

The C grade took on Golden Grove in the first game of the new year. This game was a 1 day (40 over) match & Lards selected his squad accordingly. With Brad Bown, Paul Dickson & myself added to the line-up, all of us noted for quick scoring.

The pitch had a real grassy look, with a couple of bare patches, the curators (Billy & Paul) both advised me this was due to the sprinkler system not working with sufficient power to actually get water to the entire square.

I cant remember if we won or lost the toss, but the important thing was we batted first. Brad & I got the nod to have a bat, and early on their young quick gave both of us a few problems, as runs were hard to come by early.

After the first bowling change however, Brad started to hit his straps, with a couple of lovely drives for 4. Eventually Brad was dismissed for 25 (our partnership reaching 59). Dicko came in and immediately looked good with some nice shots off his pads, I went in the over before drinks for 30, Dicko went soon after for 13 & a collapse was on.

Foxy came out, resplendent in his Michael Clarke pads, gloves & bat, but unfortunately went for a very Michael Clarke golden… Reg Lapidge, in his first ‘under age’ game for the season fell soon after for 2 & it took the experience of Gary Speak & Michael Larnder to stop the rot.

Gary was in fine form, getting off the mark with a 6 & then scoring freely and was eventually out for an excellent 59. Lards made 15, while Moff (who hit an incredible 6) made 8 and Nath a globe. The tail stopped the rot however, with ‘Red ink’ Hanson undefeated on 6 & Pete Myers not out on 8. In the end we’d made 9/196 from our 40 overs, meaning Golden Grove would have to score at 5 an over for the win. Moff & Pete opened up and the ‘Grove’ openers got off to a flyer, after 8 they were about 0/40, but Lards made a crucial bowling change. Paul ‘Golden Arm’ Dickson, with 0 wickets to his name came on to bowl. He claimed the first 2 scalps of his Unley career (and of the game). When Nath Crossman came on to bowl at the other end, the brakes were well and truly put on.

Dicko finished with 2/34 from his 9, while Nath’s leggies were virtually unplayable, he finished with 9 overs 0/18, without conceding a single boundary.

From that point on, the game was under control, after Golden Arm & Beetle had finished their spells, The field was pushed back & the pressure applied. Moff & Lards both claimed 2 wickets & I snared 1.

At the end of the 40 overs, Golden Grove had made it to 8/152, giving us the win. Great start to the year & perhaps gives us just the faintest chance of making the finals..

C grade Round 5 vs Pooraka

The C grade took on Pooraka at Pooraka, with a strong team on a hot day Lards won the toss & we elected to bat. I opened up the batting with Dallas, who hit 3 cracking boundaries but was gone in the 2nd over for 11 exciting runs. Kent Haigh was back in the team at number 3 & immediately looked comfortable, hitting some lovely shots & running hard between the wickets.

I was dismissed for 21, Laurie for 21, Gary Speak made 31 & Foxy 26… During this whole time Kent just kept on batting. Eventually Kent was dismissed for 117, a beautiful innings that the rest of the team batted around. Lards picked up where Kent left of with a lusty 35 & the tail also wagged (4 boundaries for Pete Myers).

In the end we were dismissed in the 70th over for 319, one of the biggest C grade scores for a long while. Lards was pretty happy with this score line, in what was an excellent team display. The 2nd week came up and again it was hot… At 1pm we had 8 players, with Laurie Marshall out & Gary running late… God only knows what happened to Dallas however (we think he got hijacked in the northern suburbs).

Gary finally arrived, but the bowlers couldn’t get a break through. Pete & Shane had the new ball & then Lards & myself, and then Nathan came on but none of us could get the wicket.

I spilled a simple chance ad mid off, while Pete had numerous edges through the vacant slips cordon. It eventually took a brilliant piece of fielding by Kent to get the 1st wicket.

The 2nd was an even more brilliant piece of fielding, with Kent swooping on a ball at square leg & throwing down the stumps at the bowlers end.

At the tea break Pooraka had done very well, being 2/150 after 38 overs, meaning they’d have to make 179 in 34 overs to get passed us. Lards pointed out that dot balls would be very important.

Lards and Shane Newbound opened up after the break & both of them hit a rhythm quickly. Lards got the crucial breakthrough dismissing the Pooraka captain, 4 overs after the interval for 92, and Shane dismissed the number 4 in the next over (good hands Party), and we were back in the hunt.

From that point on Pooraka gave up the chase, whilst our bowling was tight, it wasn’t all that venomous. We bowled out the 72 overs, with Pooraka ending at 8/263, a well fought win from the boys, especially pleasing was the bowling & fielding with only 9 men, although the batting display in the first game was also very good.

Well done fellas.

Round 2 V Concordia

After last games results we were looking for a better effort from all against our neighbour in Concordia OCCC. Winning the toss we elected to bat, this mainly due to only having 7 players at 12.20. This forced us to open with a pair of genuine number 11’s in Party and Wazza. We got off to a solid start with Party frustrating the bowlers with him constantly teasing them outside off stump with a threat of hitting one soon. After seeing out 15 overs we were 0/35 then Wazza was run out for a very very patient 22. Party went soon after for 9, Laurie and Garry Harris followed very shortly after. This had young James Quire and Garry Speak in, Gary started to take to the bowling but went once too often, holding out for an aggressive 25. We were on 104 when Speaky was dismissed, right on afternoon tea. Wazza spoke to boys about not worrying about the runs, defend your wicket and see out as many overs as we can. Fast forward 15 minutes and we are all out for 108. James Quire ending up 13 not out and showed every batsman that patience and waiting for the bad ball is not such a bad thing. To Concordia’s credit their bowlers were disciplined and bowled fullish and outside off all day, waiting for batsmen to get themselves out, which we did do what they wanted.

We had 28 overs at them at the end of the day and went out with a positive attitude and tried to knock a few over before stumps. Podge opened up down wind and bowled 11 beautiful overs, snaring 2 wickets and also having 4 dropped catches. New player to the club Johnny “Perth” Aspin opened up from the other and had a little bit of trouble with the ball swinging a mile, he bowled 8 overs for 0/30 and was unlucky on a couple of occasions. Mario also picked up a wicket to see Concordia end up at 3/89 at the close of play.

Week 2 and Concordia crawled to the total and decided to keep batting until tea, ending up at 8/190. Bowling honors went to Podge 4/65 off 20.5, Mario had 2/30 off 10 and young Alex Matushik bowled 6 overs for 2/13 and could have had more if there was a LBW rule. We had 36 overs to bat out the day, the boys were instructed to go out and put a value on their wicket and see out the 36 over whilst having some fun. We started off poorly with Harry and Perth both falling cheaply (Perth rolled up just before afternoon tea and demolished half of it, had his bat, was fired out then went off to his next house inspection). James Quire was still around showing great determination and patience and along with Laurie Marshall pushed the ball around the park. The Claw fell for 30 and this bought Speaky in and again he hit the ball hard a far but fell quickly for 22. James was still going and was being joined by his Under 17 team mate in Alex Matushik. The boys saw out the last 12 overs and managed to get us pass their 1st innings total. We ended up at 4/87 with James batting the whole innings being 18 not out and Alex 12 not out. The week before Alex made his maiden century for the Unley Cricket Club in the Under 17’s whilst James snared 4/3 with his leg spin.

C Grade Round 1 V SPOC

First game of the season, not for the first time saw Unley scrambling for players… As a result of this, myself & Benny Barratt found ourselves in the C's, ably captained by Michael Lardner, with a real mixed grill of players, including Marshall (senior AND Junior) and long retired (thanks for coming back) Steve (Sherlock) Holmes.

We started week 1 with only 10 men (Chad didn’t realise he was playing), and on what looked like a perfect deck, we were sent in to bat. Benny & I got the opportunity to open up the batting & Benny took the first ball of the season… This was wide and full, but Benny still managed to reach it, just enough for an edge to 3rd slip to kick off the season. Joshy Stevens came in at 3 for the 2nd ball of the day, saw that out & managed to smash a ball for 4 next ball, from that point on, Josh looked a great, but unfortunately was bowled by one that just didn’t come up.This became the story of the day, with perhaps 1 ball getting over waist high for the entire innings. Unfortunately, this left the boys (most of whom hadn't trained yet this year) vulnerable to LBW… We duly obliged (we gave 5 LBW's) & unfortunately were rolled for 71 in 31.2 overs. I had a good day, staying undefeated on 22, (16 singles in a row at the start) but in hindsight, maybe I should have gone for a few more…

At any rate, we knew batting wasn't going to be easy & with Josh & Lards opening up we gave ourselves a sniff… At the end of the 2nd over they were 2/4 (both openers hitting the stumps) & we were bubbling… From that point on it was a bit of a cake walk for SPOC, as they passed us just 2 wickets down in about 13 overs. At that point they declared (with a lead of 8) which was interesting….

Lards gave Benny & I the opening duties again & this time I was first to go, while at the other end, Benny got peeved by a leg byes call (which he thought he'd hit) and then proceeded to paste the bowling all over the park. Joshy & Holmes both came & went, and Benny was gone just before the close for 39 (off about 25 balls), which left us 4/65 at the end of day one, with Fabio on 0* thinking about a possible pair & Lawrie on 2*

The second day of the match, Chad had arrived. Lards pumped us up with words about getting a lead of 150 & going for the outright to turn things around. Laurie it a lovely 4, as did Fabio, but they were soon dismissed. Chad came in & looked he goods, his driving was especially pleasing, but when he was dismissed for 22 the rest soon followed. We were finally rolled for 112 of (strangely) 31.2 overs.

This gave us only 105 to defend, but with an extra bowler/fielder, we again gave ourselves hope…. Chad dutifully claimed an early wicket, but as per the week before, we struggled to really trouble the batsman. They passed us 1 down this time, with only 1 chance missed (bad luck Benny). The only highlight of the day was that we got back to the club in time to down a few $2 beers and cheer the A's on in a hard fought win… And we also got to hear about wins in the B's & LOD's (well done boys)..

There's always next week eh???

D Grade

The D’s took on Gepps Cross with only three players from the previous game. The Whale won the toss and with advise from co-captain the unlucky Tony Fiore decided to have a bowl on a mid 30 degree day. Then as the game neared two within a couple of minutes Whale took a look at the new look team and realized the team had no pace bowlers and likely opening bowler Mario Spinelli yet to arrive. Whale was to open from one end and as Fiore was about to prepare to bowl the first over Mario arrived. As we took to the field we were still a player short so an injured Burts agreed to field at first slip. We took the field with an over-whelming odour of linament as gun recruit Simon I need horse steroids Moody joined the field with Fiore and Whale.

The first few overs were quite successful with the whale taking a couple of wickets and they were 2/20. After 9 overs the whale was spent and we looked around at our many spinning options and Brad Luke Perry took the ball. Tone Fiore took the ball from the other end with wicket keeper Laurie the Claw Marshall standing back reasoning that as there is no spin imparted on the ball that Tone must be a medium pacer. Our eleventh player Andrew Bui eventually arrived looking resplendent in his Cargo pants to be informed that his services were no longer required. Gepps Cross however had started taking control on a belter of a pitch, with a small fast outfield. The hustling in the fields from Whale, Fabio and the one-legged Burts was turning ones into twos. They had reached 2/100 in the 24th over before young Chinaman bowler Oscar Wright who also plays in the under 15’s produced a ripper wrong-un to dismiss the opening bat who was looking very impressive. Fabio had now moved behind the stumps as the Claw still would not stand up and used up all the time he had to get the stumping. From here Gepps Cross kept in full control with a partnership of hundred taking them to 4/206 in the 46th over and 5/255 in the 53rd before there number 4 was dismissed two short of his ton through the crafty medium pace of Tony Fiore. From this point on a collapse was triggered again to Tone before they declared after 59 overs at 9/286 a scoring rate close to 5 an over. The pick of the bowlers was the great Tone who took 5/74 from 21 overs destroying his chances of bowling in the veterans 20/20 final if it had taken place. Young Oscar Wright took 2/63 of 10 but the small boundaries did not help the spinners too much. Whale took 2/33 at the start of the day and Mario bowled 16 unsuccessful overs for 0/73.

We had 8 overs to bat and with the many options putting there hand up to open the batting the Whale chose Dallas Wheaton a bold move giving his penchant for late arrivals if he was to be not out and Brad Luke Perry playing his first game for several years. Luke was dismissed early for a duck and our other under 15 player Ollie Smith was sent in to bat out the day. Ollie was cleaned bowled third ball but fortunately Tone had called no-ball. Dallas and Ollie managed to get through the rest of the overs and we finished the day at 1/19.

Day 2 started and Dallas had arrived on time but Luke Perry decided that since he was out he didn’t need to turn up. Dallas and Ollie negotiated several balls but didn’t add to many runs. Dallas went for 8 and when Ollie went for 12 we were 3/39. A very aggressive Tone then joined the bionic man Simon Moody and put on 51 runs. Tone very unlucky lobbing a pull shot to square leg for 28. The opposition then gave him a spray saying he had just lost the game outright for us a big call considering they still needed 16 wickets. Burts a little more mobile this week then joined the Bionic man and they added 126 in 24 overs to take the score to 5/206 when the Bionic Man fell for a well made 85. The Claw then joined Burts and took the total past Gepps Cross total before Burts was waddled out for 107, well short of the mark posted by Stink in the C’s the previous week, with Burts and Laurie having an 86 run union. The Claw then fell for a well made 41 and Whale had some fun smashing 35 before we declared at 9/335 so we could get some two dollar beers at the club and luckily the B Grade were bowling this week to make that possible. The boys have declared this the greatest run chase in C3 in Unley Cricket Clubs history, a great effort. Perusing the club stats there is only one better run chase which actually occurred in the Brock Partners cup a now defunct 50 over knockout competition where Unley chased down 294. Next week we travel to Para Hills looking for a third consecutive victory to make 3 wins for the year.

LOD’s Round 16 – Unley vs Hectorville

We turned up on a scorcher (38 degrees c/101 ferenheit) with the knowledge that regardless of our results in the last 2 games, we were ensured 2nd place. We arrived only to discover that the pitch hadn't been prepared - not rolled, no lines painted, even still had ropes around the pitch. But after discussing our options witht the opposing captain, we decided that we'd play anyway on the pitch that we used last week.

I won the toss for the first time in 2008, and considering the state of the pitch, sent Hectorville in. Quickly the pitch settled down, and my decision was looking like a poor one. We did, however, create some chances... but 5 dropped catches in the first 10 overs really hurt us, Hectorville were off to a flyer, 2/70 off 12 overs. "Perth" Aspin was bowling well, and bowled his 9 overs straight through taking 2/35, but all the other bowlers copped some punishment. We did manage to pin them back until drinks, and Hectorville were 2/86 at the break. We knew we had to knuckle down, bowl tight and start fielding well, but unfortunately that didn't happen... 3 more catches went down, the bowling was so-so, and the game got away from us... Hectorville compiling a very good score of 6/213 off their 40 overs.

I told the boys that I didn't expect a win, but I would be VERY disappointed if we just rolled over for a low score - I wanted us to bat through and make a good score. I sent the in-form Jimmy Pop in to open the batting with the man with the horse heart Brett Murphy. We too got off to a flyer, losing our first wicket in the 14th over, Jimmy gone for a well made 44 which included a six he hit whilst falling over - amazing shot. I joined Murph and proceeded to ride my luck - dropped on my first ball, caught on 5, but over the boundary. But in the midst of this action, Murph and I put our respective feet down, taking short singles and hitting boundaries. Some good abtting saw us fly past Hectorville's score with 9 wickets in hand and 10 overs to spare - a solid 7.1 runs an over. I got a chancy, but quickfire 72*, but the man-of-the-match Murph was the most impressive, scoring a sensational 86* - incredible for someone who had heart surgery just a few months ago.

All in all a great chase, very happy with it. The boys do need to learn from this though - we are not always going to be on top, but we are a good team, and by staying positive we can get out of any situation.

Flinders Uni next week, and a chance to play around with the batting order and bowling, then bring on the finals

LOD’s Round 15 – Unley vs Flinders Uni

This week saw the LOD’s face off against Flinders Uni in a 2nd vs 5th encounter that would really shape the finals.

Benny had a re-jigged line-up (as usual), with no less than 5 players changed from the team that won last week.

Benny lost the toss for the 3rd match in a row (when is he going to learn ‘tails never fails’) and the Flinders captain elected to bat on what looked like a typical flat hard Vic park pitch.

Benny had the luxury of having Adam ‘Robin Hood’ Beauchamp and ‘TKO’ Toddy Owen to open the bowling. Toddy opened down wind, while Beachy had the honour of trying to fling the ball into the gale force breeze.

Both bowled beautifully, with Beachy gaining appreciable swing both ways, while Todd was just damn quick.

Beachy struck the first blow with an outswinger that caught the bat low, Wade affected an excellent diving 1 handed catch in front of Gazza Hazza at slip. The 2nd wicket was due to the application of pressure, with the batsman pushing the ball to mid on, off TO’s bowling, Todd managed to dive and collect the ball full stretch and then turned & threw down the stumps at the bowlers end.

The 3rd wicket was another exceptional piece of fielding, as Todd bowled perhaps his only loose ball of the day, a short wide one. The batsman gleefully SMASHED it to cover, where Jimmy Pop took an excellent catch, diving low to his right.

At this stage we had Flinders 3/6 and in all sorts of trouble.

Joe Windows followed Todd down wind, and also bowled with great pace and control, while at the other end Beachy was terrorising the Flinders batters with his swing.

Beach-ball ended with 3/7 off his 9 overs, at which time Steve Saf followed up into the wind.

The Flinders middle order capitulated to Saf’s slow in-swingers, as he ended up with 4/3(9), whilst the quicker bowlers at the other end made it almost impossible to score.

Todd finished with 1/9(9), whilst Joe was equally un-playable with 0/9(7). Jonny ‘Perth’ Aspin was hit for the first boundary of the day and had figures of 0/10(3), whilst the captain Benny Barratt was also dispatched for a boundary before claiming the final wicket with 1/4(1).

In the end Flinders Uni were dismissed for just 46 in 38 overs, and the captain was ecstatic. The bowling had been top rate, and this was brilliantly supported by the fantastic fielding through out the innings.

Jimmy Pop and Steve ‘good’ Saf were given the job of racking up the runs & were given 2 instructions – Garry Harris said ‘Don’t give them a sniff’ whilst Benny had requested we knock the score off quickly, as $2 beer was beckoning at the club.

Obviously the openers had each only listened to 1 piece of advice, as when the runs were passed in 14 overs, Jimmy had made an entertaining 42* with Saf sneaking along to 6*

A great result for the boys, but not really a stern test. I’m sure things will bemore difficult next week.

LOD Match report - 12/1/08. Unley vs Payneham (Wellington Oval)

We started the new year in the best possible way, by winning the toss and sending them in on a pitch that looked like it had a bit in it. The decision was justified as we had them 2/0 in just 9 balls, and a third followed reasonably quickly leaving Payneham reeling at 3/26. The pitch was popping early and the makeshift attack of Kevin 07 and Perth were bowling very well with great control.

The introduction of Ghost and the Highway yielded some chances, but Payneham decided their best method of defense was to attack and began to open the shoulders. A couple of easy catches went down, but Unley fought hard to limit the barrage on the tiny oval. The skipper introduced himself, and nabbed the crucial wickets claiming both batsmen in the 110 run partnership.

some tight bowling, and the return of the openers into the attack skittled the rest of the Payneham team. Barratt with 4/42, Nguyen 1/30-odd and the pick of the bowlers Jonny "Perth" Aspin 4/12, including two wickets off his last two balls left Unley chasing a tough 185, but on a small oval, we thought we had a chance.

Jimmy marked his intentions, getting the team off the mark with a towering six over long-on, but lost partners at a rate, Gaz, Fabes, Bazz and Humey all going for single figures - 3 of them LBW to decisions that I'd rather not comment on any further for fear of getting fined by the match referee. Wade came in to join the trail-blazing Puopolo and they put on 54 for the 5th wicket and really got us back into the game before Wade edged one to slip.

Perth relished a chance for a promotion to 7 in the order, and put on another good partnership with Jimmy who had by now passed 50. Jonny slotted a beautiful six, but lost his partner for an excellent score of 77. Jonny battled bravely and aggressively, but eventually got caught. Evo, Kev and Piercey all fell quickly and we ended up all out for 157. A disappointing result, but some good individual performances to build on.

We will welcome our opening bowling attack of Ando and Podger back into the line-up next week in a must-win clash against 2nd placed Fulham.

Barramundi

Round 8 V Glenunga - Saturday 1st December

With just 3 people there 10 minutes before the start of the game, I was getting concerned that we may have to forfeit, but 6 of the boys arrived to to the news that Unley had won the toss and would bat. Our 10th player, Joe Pryle a former UK clubmate of Gary Speak arrived shortly after, and the game was back on even terms - 10 vs 10.

Chad and Jimmy opened up against a decent opening pair and put on a partnership of 44 before Jimmy sliced one to gully for 28. Chad and Humey both went reasonable quickly and we were 3 for 60-odd. Joe Pryle and Captain Barratt saw it through until drinks where the score was a respectable 3 for 94. But after drinks we lost a couple more quick ones which brought the enigmatic Damien "Bung Fritz" Frittam to the crease. A couple of lusty blows later the 200 was up with plenty of time left, Barratt reaching his maiden century with just a few overs to go. Frittam was out for a well made, and quickfire 46 (including 4 towering sixes). Some good little partnerships at the end allowed Unley to amass their highest score of the season - 7/271, Barratt unbeaten on 119

We opened up with a formiddable dual left-arm attack of Bunger and The Mouth From The South East, who both generated some good pace. However the Glenunga openers were equal to the task and survived and scored well. Both Fritz and Ando grabbed a wicket late in their spell, before Kevin 07 and Ghost were thrown the ball. Runs were still coming freely at this stage, but Wade managed to grab 2 wickets before the drinks break. Glenunga at the teak break were 4 for 100 and the game was well and truly on. After the break, however, it was all one way traffic with Chad and Barratt taking all 5 required wickets and Glenunga were all out for 134 with Barratt taking 4/15. The Glenunga captain battled superbly, and was helped by some short bowling to make 78, but the spoils got to Unley, and they improve to 7-1.

Looking to go 8-1 next week with a win at home against Ingle Farm

Cheers

Benny B

LOD Round 7 V Adelaide Uni

The Unley boys took on Adelaide Uni, on Election Day November 24th, with another strong side; we were greeted by a beautiful ground & lovely pitch. Not to mention some ‘talented’ tennis players nearby.

Benny won the toss & elected to bat first, in what were ideal conditions for cricket (we even had music emanating from the guitar festival to keep us amused). Jimmy Pop & Chad opened up & looked comfortable until the 2nd opener put one passed Chad’s head 3rd ball, with a real effort ball. Aside from that though, they both got the scoreboard moving nicely, before Chad was dismissed for 11 (he later suggested he didn’t hit it). Hayden Daley was back, and was installed at number 3, he hit 4 streaky 4’s before chipping one too many & was gone for 16 at which point Benny strode to the crease. Jimmy & Benny carried us to drinks without much bother, both of them scoring freely as our run rate was about 5 an over.

1st ball after the break Jimmy was dismissed for an excellent 49, in what was another fine display of batting. Humey came in & batted with great intelligence, working the singles & allowing Ben most of the strike, the boys put on about 80 before Humey went for 23. Wade didn’t last too long, but Dallas came in and again worked the singles for Benny, as he was closing in on a ton. In the end though time ran out, as we finished the 40 overs at 6/220, a fine score. Benny was undefeated (and stuffed) on 93* while Dallas was run out off the last ball for 11.

After the lunch break, Ando & Kev opened up the bowling; both of them extracted good swing & pace. While Ando seemed unplayable, it was Kev with 2 important early breakthroughs, both clean bowled with the batsman playing down the wrong line.

Chad then followed Kevin up, and while the batsman continually played and missed, he couldn’t get the wicket (although one was grassed by Wade). I replaced Ando at the other end, and the Benny replaced the unlucky Chad.

Benny got the important wicket of their captain (who’d hit me for a couple of 4’s) and then I managed to get a tickle from their opener which was nicely taken by Humey (who now had the gloves on). Benny & I both managed 2 more wickets (for 3 each), and Ando finally got some reward by snaring the final wicket.

In the end they were dismissed for 134, an excellent win & great team performance from the boys… Obviously the captain had a bit of a field day, but the most promising thing was the contributions from the whole team.

Good start there boys, moves us up to 2nd place. Let’s see if we can keep the momentum going. Lastly we also won the Quiz Night!!!!!
