PATCHWORK
Patchwork is sewing different pieces of fabric (preferable 100% cotton) together to form a top. Often geometric shapes are used. Quilting is stitching 3 layers together to make a sandwich: a top (wholecloth or patchwork), a batting and a simple piece of fabric to form the back. Often the stitching is made in all kinds of shapes like geometric shapes, hearts or feathers. When the patchwork and quilting is done the result is called a quilt! People who do this are called quilters.
Beginners Patchwork:
We are a class of various capabilities from absolute beginners to competent Patchworkers. We will start you (if required with something simple), or help with something you have seen in a magazine, or with a pattern you couldn’t resist. We will also help with UFO’s (who doesn’t have them). Please come along and look us over, check out what everyone is doing, and then say “I could do that” – or as 90% of us have said “Could I do that?’ – Yes! They are a great and varied group of women. Materials, scissors, needles and cottons are of course required, but look first. It won’t hurt or cost anything except your Membership to U3A. We can cover cutting, stitching, basting, quilting, naive applique or needle turn applique, and of course there is always a lot of laughter and talk.
Patchwork:
Patchwork Advanced is a group who bring their own work to do. We all help each other, and if there is something you cannot do, there will always be someone who can show you. We also share ideas, patterns, and knowledge. I personally love to do needle turn applique, others like naive (buttonhole stitch) but cutting, stitching etc. are all there for you to learn or improve.
During the year the Patchworkers make bus trips to numerous country centres,
visiting Patchwork shops where they are always very welcome and usually enjoy
special prices and a cup of tea or coffee with biscuits.
Many patterns, books and materials are purchased during the year, ready to
continue with the fascinating art of Patchwork and Quilting.
