UNION OF AUSTRALIAN WOMEN
Victorian Branch
The UAW is a national organisation formed in 1950 to work for the status and well being of women in a peaceful and environmentally safe world. We seek to improve the lives of women through focussing on issues of equity and social justice. We also highlight the often hidden role of women in Australian society, particularly women's contribution to its economic, social, cultural and political life.
Click on ABOUT US for information on our history and past and current campaigns, which include:
- Elimination of violence against women
- Abortion law reform and reproductive rights
- Affordable public housing and health
- Rights for asylum seekers
WE NETWORK AND COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER WOMEN THROUGH:
- Our LINKS with women's groups, such as WomenSpeak, WEL, National Council of Women Victoria, and WILPF and community and trade union organisations and their campaigns.
- Regular meetings/lunches and brunches (information updated monthly in WHAT'S ON) to exchange ideas and discuss and plan actions for change
- Our monthly Newsletter for members and our radio program on 3CR each Monday at 11.30 am
- Our PUBLICATIONS - books, video and photographic- including a history of the UAW- Left Wing Ladies, and a Travelling Photographic Exhibition Nothing on a Plate of women's journey towards equity in Victoria from Federation to 2001 (which may be borrowed), and the recent Women's Map of Melbourne which is available from the UAW office. A copy of the map may be viewed from this link. This map sets out places in the CBD of significance in the history of women and celebrates the contribution women have made to the life of this city.
- We also have a collection of photographs of UAW activities and members since early days and up to the present
If you are looking for an organisation with ideas, energy and a social conscience, become a member of the UAW and participate in our work for a better world for women.
