HISTORY

We are an autonomous group based on the principles of the University of the Third Age. Based on the world-wide organization founded in France in 1972, U3As were first established in Victoria in 1984, and have since been established throughout Australia and New Zealand. We are one of the 77 groups with over 25,000 members in Victoria. Most U3As are part of the U3A Network Victoria Inc. See: U3A Network Victoria

A spin-off from the Retired Persons of Werribee, which was founded by Walter Eacott in 1986, was the wish of a number of its members to participate in U3A. The nearest association was Footscray, and we joined in classes there for a couple of years.

In January 1992 we called an interest meeting to gauge support for our own branch of U3A. There was an enthusiastic response, and in February that year we set up with 35 members, running classes in history, psychiatry, calligraphy, art and current affairs.

Our first President was Professor Sydney Dunn, AO, a well-known educationist (since deceased) and with his connections we quickly established a cordial relationship with the Werribee Campus of V.U.T.

We now have about 270 members and continue to grow.
