Tulip Festival - Ron Jenkins
The weather for our day out was perfect, just warm enough to dispense with
top coats but not too warm to be unfomfortable. With a little bit of prompting
from Merle, we all shuffled on to our transport and were soon on our way
down the Freeway and over the Westgate. After clearing 'Passport Control',
we drove through the Burnley Tunnel and emerged on the 'Far Side'. A short
visit to the Lilydale Lakes followed, where a couple of the ladies insited
on trying out the childrens playgroup equipment. We arrived safely at Tesselaars
Tulip Farm. A short wait until tickets were arranged and then we were turned
loose to enjoy what was on offer.
As well as the obligatory tulips, naturally, of all colours, varieties
and shapes, there was a selection of eating places, a shop where one could
purchase tulip bulbs etc. An Aussie Bush Band entertained us and they
were excellent.. Quite a few visitors were later seen, juggling
about, in time to the music of course.
There was information regarding the history of tulips which originated from Turkey, although Max Bygraves always sang "Tulips from Amsterdam", perhaps the lyrics, "Tulips from Istanbul" didn't rhyme to the music.
Rides in a horse drawn carriage were available and a sculpture exhibition was on show amongst the tulips, which I must must admit was a first for me, in fact, I think it was probably a first for everyone. The day passed quickly and soon it was time to return to Werribee via a pleasant drive through the Dandenong ranges.
Something to enchant you and get you moving!
