Newsletter - August 2005

President’s Report:

Our August Coffee Morning was attended by Molly Kolody and her two daughters to hear Max Marshall give a talk on Michael Kolody’s notes on Chinese inventions of the past. It was a most interesting delivery (I am sure all present found it fascinating) and we are indebted to Max for his time and effort.

Developments occurring since the June Newsletter impel me to advise that the Coffee Morning which was to be held on 5th September will now be held on 12th September. Anna Norris from Better Hearing Australia will be talking about Hearing Health and Loss – a subject which is important to most of us.
The 3rd October Coffee Morning has also had to be put forward to 10th October, when Geoff Gaff will be speaking about his experiences whilst teaching in Saudi Arabia – also a topical subject.

Whilst on the subject of future events, I would now mention that we now have 14 people taking advantage of the subsidy your U3Ais offering towards the concession entry cost for viewing the Dutch Old Masters Exhibition. It is intended to visit the National Art Gallery on Wednesday, 21st September, during the school holidays so that no classes are interrupted. The cut-off date for notice of inclusion in this excursion is Friday, 9th September.

It is also proposed that we have a Progressive Luncheon on Wednesday, 28th September. There is a list in the hallway for members to add their name if attending and what contribution they wish to make towards the winter banquet: whether it be Entrée, Main Course (Casserole or similar), Dessert or a contribution of $10:00 in lieu, which will be put towards refreshments.

Other news is that last term we had a visitor from England joining our Bridge group and enjoying their company and this term we have had a young Chicago undergraduate assisting Friday photo editing classes, so we really have been blessed! She has also joined the Craft class, demonstrating Christmas decorations and in return, she was impressed with our embossed Christmas cards.

When we return from this term break, we will be looking towards our Annual General Meeting on 28th November and it is timely to ask if our members could contribute one item towards our annual Christmas raffle.
