M.V. Blackbird Story

The Annual General Meeting will he held on Monday November 19th, 2001 at the "Raceview" Restaurant Rooms at Victoria University at 10.30 am.
A representative of the Maribyrnong River's own "M.V. Blackbird" will be the guest speaker

Our Theme for this year's Annual General Committee Meeting is following the same trend as many other organisations, we are celebrating Australia's centenary of Federation.
Our committee would like everyone to join in the celebration by looking into their cupboards to find some item of the period, so a display of the various treasures can be arranged.
You may have a photograph, clothing object or souvenir of the period that you would like to share with us on the day. It would also assist the committee if you could provide a written history of the item.
If you could bring the item and take it home after the meeting, your participation will help to make the day an overwhelming success.

The committee would also like to remind all tutors that a report of class activities is needed for the AGM.

Peter Somerville of the MV Blackbird
Peter Somerville of the "MV Blackbird"

This is a precis of an article done by Janine Rohriach on Peter Somerville Captain of the MV Blackbird which cruises Melbourne's number one river, the Maribyrnong.

Peter remarks in this article how he surprises his customers because they believe that the Maribyrnong is a dirty, narrow drain and they get a smack in the face more or less, when they see how wide and clean the river is. The river has changed from being heavily polluted with fats and heavy metals and carcasses floating down the river in the 70's to a river where we can see at least two metres through the water - that's how clear it is.

The Blackbird is a quaint wooden plate river-style ferry boat. Peter said that he would get chauvinistic with the comment, "It's like a woman, you're always spending money on it all the time".

The river has many varieties of fish in it from Bream Mullet, to Mulloway Shark. Peter stated that he loved the tranquility, the clean open air, the Greenness of the valley, he likened it to the old film, How green was my valley? He said "It's not a job, it's a love affair".

As this is the year "INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS", and our U3A is a VOLUNTEER ORGANISATION, your committee came up with the idea to invite all members to celebrate the event at our Annual General Meeting on the 19th of November 2001, at 10.30am, where lunch will be Provided at no cost to members.
