U3A Western Region Inc. is proud to be a unit in the U3A movement which is found in many countries of the world. |

Background: The University of The Third Age originated in Toulouse France in 1972 and operated in conjunction with an established university. The concept spread, but when it reached Britain in 1981, a slightly different model was adopted, that of a self help organisation not necessarily attached to any institution. In 1984 U3As were formed in Melbourne and followed the British model in looking to their members to provide not only the pupils but the tutors, class leaders and volunteers who are responsible for administrative tasks. |
Western Region U3A Inc. was established in 1988 and has grown in membership and in the contribution it makes to the community. Management Each U3A is autonomous. A Committee of Management is responsible for the making of policy and day to day running of the organisation. Members of the Committee take on particular areas of responsibility. Why are We Called U3A. A U3A is a university in the original sense of the word; a community of people devoted to learning and its members are in the third age of active retirement. |
