For the heavenly beloved: love songs to Jesus and Mary

Troves upcoming gig for the Early Arts Guild is a set of non-liturgical love songs for Jesus and his mother Mary.

The medieval music of Christian Europe abounds in love songs to the heavenly pair who carried a touch or more of humanity in their veins, Jesus and Mary his mother. These are the two who came to earth and lived among humankind to save souls from death and Hell, the consequences of Adam’s sin. This special bond of kinship inspired countless songs overflowing with love and gratitude to the two who shared our humanity and understood our plight. Often these songs were couched in the language of earthly love for a beloved but transposed onto a heavenly recipient. Troveresse takes a selection of these musical offerings of love from France, Italy, England and Spain, c1150-1500. Annabel Green joins us for readings with gesture.

When: Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 2.15. Where: St. Cuthbert’s Presbyterian Church, 10 Wilson St. Brighton.Admission $5 for those 18 years or over. Information 9699 8417. The Early Arts Guild has some other great concerts coming up. Find out more on this phone no.
