ADVENTSFEIER in Bentleigh – Sunday 5th December at 2:30pm

The Rosa bus is nearly full. Please ring the TSA Office as soon as possible if you are still looking for a seat.

A reminder that all the setting up for Adventsfeier will take place from 2:00pm on Saturday 4th December. We will set up the hall and the craft area and, importantly, pack all our wonderful Gutsle.

We would still love to receive a few more raffle prizes. These should be forwarded to the TSA Office or brought in person and put under the Adventskranz on the day of the Adventsfeier.

If you made a batch of Gutsle for us last year, maybe this year you could make two. The number of people baking is getting less every year but the amount we can sell is still the same if not more, as our older people love to buy them. Gutsle can be left with Tony and Renate Beilharz,   prior to Wednesday 1st December or at the Office by Friday 3rd. If you are coming to set up on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm you can also bring them then.

We look forward to seeing many of you and your friends at the Adventsfeier on Sunday 5th December commencing at 2:30pm.

Tania Richter and Marianne Herrmann

ADVENT IN BAYSWATER – Thursday 9th December 8:00pm

A reminder that everyone is invited to the Bayswater Hall to celebrate Advent with candles, readings (most in English) and carols. For details see November TR, page 36.

CONFIRMATION in the Temple Society ... want to know more?

The next Confirmation classes in the Temple Society Australia are scheduled to start in June 2011, with the confirmation ceremony planned for 18th September 2011 in Melbourne and 25th September 2011 in Sydney.

What does this mean? What are confirmation classes about? Who should get confirmed? Why should anyone get confirmed? How old are you meant to be to get confirmed? Why do we need classes? Can people not in Melbourne participate in confirmation?

If you have any questions about Confirmation, or just want to learn more, come along to the:

        Confirmation Information and Discussion evening

Bayswater Chapel, Friday 10th December 7:30pm

Anyone is welcome, whether you have a son or daughter or grandchild at ‘confirmation’ age (generally around year 9 and 10), or are just interested. You may be a teenager at confirmation age yourself and want to know more before committing yourself to the classes.

Please let Renate (email: beilharztr@ozemail.com.au) know if you are considering coming, so we can make sure we have enough supper available.

If you live too far away or can’t make it, but have some questions, please feel free to contact Renate or Mark Herrmann at the Office. We are especially keen to hear from people living at a distance from Melbourne who may be interested in a ‘distance’ confirmation session.

Renate Beilharz, on behalf of the Temple Society Elders

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

Saturday 18th December 5:00pm Bayswater

Note: the Community Christmas Celebration Weihnachtsfeier is on Saturday 18th December, not Sunday 19th as was printed in the 2010 TSA Yearly Calendar.

Everyone is invited to the Community Christmas Celebration in Bayswater. This is a communal and family event for youngest to oldest, with children participating and a lot of communal carol singing. There will be some light refreshments at the end of the evening.

Giving Christmas

Please bring a gift to put under our Christmas tree for the Giving Tree Appeal. On the gift, record the gender and age for which the gift is best suited.

All children aged 10 and under, or participating in the play, will receive a small gift from Father Christmas, who has been invited to attend our celebration.

Calling for children to participate

Children are invited to participate in the evening by:

Ø       Ø   Joining in the traditional candle procession at the start of the celebration

Ø       Ø   Joining in the performance of ‘Santa’s Secrets’ and ‘Wombat’s Christmas’

Ø       Ø   Joining in the children’s songs

Ø       Ø   Joining in the dances

Ø       Ø   Dressing up for the nativity re-enactment

Children are welcome to join in on the night.

Children interested in participating are encouraged to attend as many of the following practices as possible, to prepare the songs, dances and play.

l  Friday 3rd December 4:00 – 6:00pm. This session will focus on introducing the play, learning songs and assigning parts.

l   Wednesday 8th December 4:00 – 6:00pm

l  Sunday 12th December 4:00 – 6:00pm

l   Thursday 16th December 4:00 – 6:00pm

l   Saturday 18th December 9:30am – 12:00 noon (dress rehearsal – it would be great to have everyone there for this practice)

Please arrive for the actual evening at about 4:45pm.

As always, with an event such as this, many hands make light work. If you can find the time to assist with tasks such as preparing the stage backdrop, making props and costumes, decorating the Christmas tree, helping with the supper preparations and serving, setting up the hall, helping Father Christmas, assisting with children’s practices etc. that would be wonderful.

Please contact either

Phuong Breisch at l_phuong@bigpond.com if you know your children would like to participate in the celebration. Let her know the age of the participants, and whether they would like a large, small or non-speaking part, or

Renate Beilharz at beilharztr@ozemail.com.au if you can help out with any tasks.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN BAYSWATER – 6:30pm

The service commences at 6:30pm. We have hired the TTHA Fischer bus but need a driver. Any licensed driver can drive the Fischer bus. Please advise the TSA Office if you are available. The TTHA Fischer bus will collect from the Bentleigh Hall at 5:45pm. If you are interested in going by bus, please contact the TSA Office ASAP on 9557 6713. The time to return will need to be a mutual decision between those on the bus and the driver.

Members and friends are invited to get together in the Bayswater Community Room (or the Chapel fellowship area if that is easier) after the service. Please bring a plate of food or nibbles to share and your own drinks.

TEMPLER CHOIR REHEARSALS FOR 2011

The Templer Choir will start rehearsing again in the Bayswater Chapel on Wednesday 26th January 2011 at 8:00pm. We have a big year ahead of us with a number of community performances in February and March, followed by our preparations for Sängerfest in Tanunda, South Australia on the first weekend of October.

We are always looking for new members to join us. As with every choir in the world (I think!), we could always use more men and more sopranos, and would particularly welcome any younger members who would like to join us, even if only for the Sängerfest. I am aware that many younger people find it difficult to commit to weekly rehearsals – if you are able to read music and do some practice in your own time between the rehearsals that you are able to attend, then I'm sure we can accommodate your other commitments. Please contact me to discuss further: Monika Strasser mvstrasser@optusnet.com.au

TEMPLER TALK AND RELIGIOUS PHILOSOPHY IN 2011

During this year, over 20 people participated in Templer Talk, a series of discussions about the basic philosophy and faith of the Temple Society. The face-to-face sessions and online sessions covered the Temple Society’s perspective on topics such as Prayer and Spirituality, God, Community, Temple Society History, the Bible and Jesus. We contemplated, talked, laughed, discussed, argued, reflected, listened, pondered, shared …for seven evenings. I would like to thank all participants for their contributions. I learnt so much from everyone and came away from each session invigorated and recharged.

Following on from the success of this program and the feedback from the Religious Philosophy discussions in August this year, the Elders will continue to offer informal conversation sessions on religion, faith, philosophy and the Temple Society in 2011. These sessions will be called Templers Talking Religious Philosophy. Another series of the original Templer Talk will be held for those who were interested, but unable to attend this year.

So, here’s the early notice of what’s in store for anyone interested in being a Templer Talker in 2011:

Templers Talking Religious Philosophy

The Elders’ team will facilitate regular conversations on topics covering religion, faith and philosophy. Topics for each will be advertised beforehand in the Templer Record and TSA Online.

Templer Talk – the fundamentals

A series of five sessions designed for adults interested in developing a basic understanding of the Temple Society’s religion, faith and philosophy. It is especially suited to:

l   people who did not grow up in the midst of a Templer community

l  Australian Templers who don’t remember the content of their confirmation classes

l   new Temple Society members

l  family and friends of Templers and

l   the wider Australian community

Templer Talk will be presented in an accessible, fun and friendly manner, to ensure a relaxed atmosphere where participants feel free to contribute. Topics will cover:

l  Temple Society – an overview of a progressive religious community

l  God, prayer and spirituality – a Templer perspective

l  Jesus and the Bible – a Templer perspective

l   Temple Society – a brief history

l   Temple Society Australia – a faith community

Participants do not need to attend all sessions in the program and, although the content will build on understandings developed in previous sessions, each is self-contained. It is planned that sessions will be held monthly, starting in February, on a weeknight in Bayswater.

What to do now:

Keep an eye out for more details in the February Templer Record. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from anyone who:

Ø    is interested in joining Templer Talk – fundamentals, letting me know their preferred weeknight

Ø    has any ideas for a Templers Talking Religious Philosophy topic

Ø    has a suggestion of when, where and how often Templers Talking Religious Philosophy should be held

Ø    is too far from Bayswater to be able to join face-to-face sessions and would be interested in some online sessions of either program

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL NIGHT – will definitely go ahead in 2011

We apologise to those who were looking forward to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Night on Saturday 13th November which needed to be postponed.

We have told Aeron the DJ that the Rock ‘n’ Roll will definitely be happening Saturday 19th February 2011 commencing at 7:00pm. The DJ will entertain from 7:00pm – 11:00pm in the Bentleigh Hall, in air-conditioned comfort if required!

So when you get together with family and friends over the coming festive period, maybe you can organise a table and have everyone note the date in their 2011 diary and calendar before it starts to fill up. Hoping for a great turnout and to all who have their outfits ready please keep them for February.

INVITATION TO SÄNGERFEST 2011

Sängerfest 2011 will be in Tanunda, South Australia, on the weekend of 1st October. The Templer Choir will be singing as well as all the other German choirs from around Australia and we would love it if we had a Templer presence in the audience. So, if you have relatives in South Australia or just haven't visited Tanunda or Adelaide for a while (or have never been there), why not consider joining us and enjoying a weekend of German, Austrian and Swiss song.

TSA BABY SITTING/CHILD MINDING SERVICE

The TSA Child Minding Service is operational!

We now have a ‘central list’ of enthusiastic and responsible teenagers who are available for baby sitting/child minding in both the Bentleigh/Moorabbin and Knox areas. The service is available for Templer families and friends as well as at Templer functions where child minding may be needed.

Most of the young people on the list are students and would only be available in the evening and on weekends until their school year finishes. After this, some may also be available during the day on weekdays.

If you are in need of a babysitter on any occasion, or if you are organising a seminar/function/activity where child minding is required, please contact me to discuss your needs and I will contact the members of the newly formed group to see who would be available to help out.

All members of the group will have a current Working With Children Check and will most likely also be familiar with and known to you and your family.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to find out more about our new concept!
