Miners at Tarnagulla

Miners at Tarnagulla

The miners are treating washdirt using a hollowed-out log to puddle the clay and help separate the gold. The men are using wooden paddles to avoid damaging the flattened kerosene tin lining of the log, and there looks to be quite a bit of interest in the final wash-up judging by the attention of the little group of spectators, including two well-dressed ladies.

I'm not sure where the photos were taken, but they are certainly in the Tarnagulla area. The photographer was Charles Bock, Tarnagulla's resident photographer of the 1920s, and the gent holding the paddle and with the bowler hat on a rakish angle is my step grandfather, George Graham.
