Victoria Shaft, Sandstone Reef, Llanelly, 2014

Victoria Shaft, Sandstone Reef, Llanelly, 2014

The Black Horse and Sandstone Company operated this mine in the 1890s. This company had been floated in London and was strongly capitalised, thus ensuring that the mine was well-equipped with the latest and most powerful machinery available.
The substantial brick in-ground structure is known as a bob pit. It housed part of the mine's very powerful steam driven water pumping equipment. The heavy sawn timbers are part of the mine's shaft collar, the 600-foot deep shaft itself being located immediately on the camera side of the collar timbers.
