British Scientists visit to Tarnagulla 16 August 1914
A momentous visit by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Members were conveyed to Tarnagulla in 35 cars provided by Bendigo volunteers. The newly adopted freezing process at the Great Poseidon mine at Newbridge was inspected en route, followed by a Banquet provided by the Tarnagulla Hotel in a marquee seating over 150. The Poverty mine and an empty Laanecoorie Weir (due to drought) were inspected on return. Reports are in The Tarnagulla & Llanelly Courier of 22 August 1914

The Tarnagulla Courier report on the timely event is fascinating too, just 2 weeks after the outbreak of World War 1. No less a person than Sir Ernest Rutherford, only recently knighted, spoke as the leader of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Wikipedia states "1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, OM, FRS was a New Zealand-born (in 1871) British physicist who became known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday."
I wonder whether the report on the Meeting of this Association in Australia, mentioned in http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/1914-british-association-meeting-held-in-australia/5658958 has any further information.
