Jim was a miner, a mine manager, a master of the Oddfellows Lodge, He later became a carpenter and an agent for the Insurance company and died of mine related lung diseases. They lived in Tarnagulla all their lives and raised 5 children in a mudbrick and weatherboard home on the south west corner of Clyde and Gladstone Sts. They attended the Presbyterian Church and saw to the education of their children as a main priority. The Lummis family were of English farming origin, and like the Alexander family, were original gold rushers in 1852, but had become farmers in Dunolly and Murphys Creek. The Alexander family were Scottish and Jim and his brothers originally mined together as a company, travelled to WA briefly and later some became farmers, whose descendants still farm locally, and many meet for reunions at Bendigo and Melbourne still.
