This was taken as a postcard.
On the back it reads: " Dear Ellie, As you are collecting postcards. This is one to add to your number.
No doubt you will know all the boys in the front of shop.
With love from Belle."
It was sent to Miss E (Ellen) Allen, Commercial Rd. Tarnagulla.
We are sorry but we don't know who they are! I can't read the post mark very well, it looks like 1912, the photo was very faded.

John Beynon.

He was a Welsh miner (born 5-4-1830, Cilau Aeron, Cardiganshire, Wales and died 27-6-1904 in Bendigo) who came to Australia with his wife Anne Morgan (1835-1904) arriving Melbourne in 1854. After working his way up through Ballarat, he arrived in Tarnagulla in 1858 where he played a lead role in the mining of the Poverty Reef as part of a partnbnership with other Welshmen. John was Mayor of the shire and on the council (1864-1868), and involved in the Welsh church, Mechainics Institute, Loyal Garibaldi Lodge, the Benevolent Society, Progress Committee. He was a Justice of the Peace and also involved in rhorse racing. John and Anne built a fine brick house ('Cardigan Villa') on the banks of the Loddon at Newbridge which stiill stands today. John ended his working life driving trains as he had over committed himself sinking more and more money into Tarnagulla mining ventures and pubs in Melbourne. His sister Letitia Beynon was married to Edward Lewis another local mining identity who later owned the Victoria Hotel.
