NATS WATER WIN WELCOME

Nationals MP, Bill Sykes has welcomed a Parliamentary Inquiry into Melbourne’s Water Supply.

Dr Sykes said, “Peter Hall, The Nationals Environment & Resource Spokesperson has done an excellent job to gain all party agreement for an Inquiry into Melbourne’s Water Supply with the following terms of reference:-

That this house requires the Environment and Natural Resources Committee to inquire, consider and report no later than 31 December 2008 on the relative merits of supplementing Melbourne’s water supply by some or all of the following means:

(1)  further water savings that can be achieved by increased conservation and efficiency efforts;

(2)  the collection of stormwater;

(3)  the reuse of treated wastewater;

(4)  the use of groundwater

(5)  small locally based desalination plants;

(6)  any other optional water source which appears to the committee to be appropriate.

Dr Sykes continued, “People in Northern Victoria must continue to fight the North South Pipeline proposal, in particular by demanding that there be an independent audit of the claimed water savings before any further action is taken.

Dr Sykes concluded, “I and my Nationals colleagues will continue to fight for a fair go for country Victorians experiencing one of the toughest times in living memory”
