PETER RYAN ADDRESSES THE DROUGHT WITH LOCAL BUSINESS

Nationals Leader, Peter Ryan, paid a flying visit to the Benalla Electorate yesterday afternoon to hear first-hand from local business owners the true extent of the drought.

Mr Ryan took time to discuss the drought with local small business owners having come straight from the "Push For The Bush" rally held in Melbourne with Member for Benalla, Dr Bill Sykes.

"It's important that we not only bring the plight of country Victorians to the attention to Melbournians, it is equally important we listen to the concerns of those people involved in downstream businesses in our towns and cities who are suffering just as much as those on the land.

"Just as the land dries up so does the flow of money into town - producing a multiplier effect with a direct impact on jobs and the viability of small businesses," Mr Ryan said.

"It is a major victory for The Nationals Federal Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran, to have the Federal Government's drought assistance package delivered so quickly - showing once again the importance of having a strong country voice representing country Victoria.

"And here at a State level, it is important we work together to ensure the survival of our local communities by reviewing the eligibility criteria of drought assistance so that we protect all people and businesses and help them through the hard times." Mr Ryan said.

Local Nationals MP, Bill Sykes said that under the strong leadership of Peter Ryan The Nationals had consistently stood up for country Victorians.

“We have been striving to get a fair go and our fair share of the $100 million/day collected in our taxes.

“I am looking forward to continuing to work together with the local community and my Nationals colleagues to help our region address the challenges we all face together.” Dr Sykes concluded.
