TRAVEL CONCESSIONS COLD COMFORT
FOR COUNTRY SENIORS
The Bracks’ Government has made some concessions to
the travel needs of senior citizens, with the rail travel vouchers now
available.
The Member for Benalla, Dr Bill Sykes welcomed the announcement of a
package of entitlements and benefits for seniors, but pointed out what was
offered was little compensation for what has been taken away.
“The package put together for Victorian Seniors Card holders includes two
off-peak travel vouchers for country seniors which need to be exchanged
for a V/Line ticket before travelling,” Dr Sykes said.
“However, it only goes a small way towards reimbursing seniors,
particularly those in the country, for the things that have been lost,
such as the $80 motor vehicle registration rebate that has been taken away
by the Bracks’ Government.”
Dr Sykes said The Nationals had pledged to reinstate that rebate,
especially as it was a real benefit for country people.
“Some people in metropolitan areas, who may not need a motor vehicle
because they can use public transport extensively, would not even notice
that the rebate has been taken away. But people in country areas need a
vehicle, so they will notice that change.
“A couple of free V/Line seats, which can only be used off peak on certain
days of the week, are cold comfort.”
Dr Sykes said he was also a little disappointed that restrictions had been
placed on country users who wanted to take up free public transport
offered as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival from 1 to 8 October.
“Free travel is being provided on metropolitan trams, trains and buses for
seniors card holders for the whole week, which is good, however, the free
travel via V/Line has some restrictions on it. There are three days during
the week when that travel is not available.
“It would be fairer if the Government allowed V/Line travel free
throughout the entire period, as is the case for metro passengers.”
