SYKES: CHANGES TO PROOF OF IDENTITY REQUIREMENTS

Bill Sykes, Nationals Member for Benalla, is urging residents to be aware of changes to evidence of identity requirements by VicRoads which will affect people applying for driver’s licences or changing their details on vehicle registrations and licences.

Recent correspondence from the Transport Minister, advised that from 1 July 2006 key changes are being introduced, including a change of name certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages that will be required when varying a given name.

He also said that VicRoads will no longer accept birth extracts as primary evidence of identity nor will it accept Keypass cards or statements of enrolment from education institutions as secondary evidence of identity. Medicare, pensioner concession or student identity cards are still among the best options for a secondary ID document.

“I suggest that anyone who is applying to VicRoads for a driver’s licence should check what evidence of identity documents will be accepted,” Dr Sykes said.

A full list of the documents accepted by VicRoads to establish evidence of identity is available at www.vicroads.vic.gov.au.
