SYKES COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY 2005

The Nationals Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes, encourages people of the Benalla Electorate to acknowledge and celebrate Saturday 3 December 2005, International Day of People with DisAbility.

“The International Day of People with DisAbility is a chance to celebrate ability. It is a day to promote the achievements of people with disabilities, to create awareness of disability issues and of the benefits gained by creating a fully inclusive society.”

Dr Sykes explained, “The day was created in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly as a day to celebrate achievements and contributions people with disabilities make to our community as well as to highlight the needs of people with diabilities and their support networks.”

“I encourage everyone to reflect upon the importance of every individual in our community on this day of awareness and celebration. The International Day of People with DisAbility is not a fundraiser, it is simply an opportunity to unite disability and community organisations, people with disabilities, carers, businesses, government, and the wider community to promote the positive message of inclusion,” continued Dr Sykes.

“I acknowledge the importance of creating greater awareness in our Electorate of disability issues and am supporting this important day.”
