SYKES: LA TROBE TAFE CLOSURE – OPPORTUNITY FROM ADVERSITY

Nationals Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes, is optimistic that La Trobe University’s withdrawal from providing TAFE training and other hands on courses at its Mt Buller Campus will result in better local training opportunities for Mansfield and North East Victoria’s young people.

Dr Sykes was briefed on the consequences of La Trobe University’s rationalisation decisions when he visited Mansfield Secondary College last Monday as part of the Principal For A Day Program.

Dr Sykes also met with La Trobe University staff at the Mt Buller Campus whilst he was attending the interschool skiing and snowboarding competition.

Dr Sykes said, “There is no doubt that the current trainers led by Craig Kappes, Chris Redmond and Anthony Comben are providing excellent training. The problem is that La Trobe University simply does not see this type of training as part of their core business.

“Around 30 Mansfield Secondary School students do part of their school-based traineeship program at Mt Buller.

“Similarly, students from Bright, Mt Beauty, Myrtleford and Benalla have all participated in programs at Mt Buller.

Dr Sykes continued, “I was also advised that 25% of the staff working on Mt Buller has been trained at the La Trobe Campus – so clearly there is a need for the service to continue.

“Encouragingly, several registered training organisations have expressed interest in taking over the training currently being offered by La Trobe University and importantly, expanding the range of courses and attracting more students.

“I share the vision of local employers, training providers and students of a wonderful opportunity to grow a world-class tourism, hospitality and outdoor recreation based training institute…I will work with them to achieve it.

“My initial focus will be on meeting the immediate needs of Mansfield Secondary College school- based trainees.

“I will also encourage La Trobe University to facilitate smooth transition of its training capability and access to its infrastructure.

Dr Sykes concluded, “Out of this short term adversity arises a fantastic opportunity to provide better local education and employment opportunities for our young people and to limit the need for them to leave the area to pursue rewarding careers.”
