SYKES GETS BEHIND
NATIONAL DIABETES WEEK
The Nationals Member for Benalla, Bill
Sykes, is keen to show his support for the National Diabetes Week campaign
‘Don’t Ignore Diabetes’.
Dr Sykes said, “The campaign starts this
Sunday and the theme was prompted by research indicating that most
Australians don’t consider diabetes to be serious and feel they are
unlikely to develop the condition.
“This is a frightening mind set. As the
promotional information shows diabetes is a real risk and can lead to
significant health problems if not diagnosed and properly managed.
Approximately seven percent of Australians are affected and it is a
potentially fatal condition.
“I strongly urge people to become well
informed about diabetes because it could save your life! The ‘Don’t Ignore
Diabetes’ campaign provides an excellent source of well summarised
information that can help you identify symptoms. If you do find yourself
in the high risk category or you suffer from the symptoms seek medical
advice.
“In the past, diabetic sufferers in our
area have found treatment to be more difficult than necessary. However,
thanks to the dedicated determination of local sufferers I was extremely
pleased to have been involved with the accreditation of local pharmacy,
Bridglands Pharmacy in Benalla by Diabetes Australia, in March last year,
which has been a great relief for local diabetics.
“Other accredited locations in the region
include, Primary Care, Echuca Regional Health on Francis Street; John
Anderson Pharmacy, Wyndham Street, Shepparton and Symons Amcal Pharmacy,
Murphy Street, Wangaratta. I would encourage anyone who has any questions
about diabetes, including questions about ordering or purchasing diabetic
medication, to get in contact with your closest accredited supplier.
“More information about diabetes, the
risks, the symptoms, treatment and National Diabetes Week can be found at
www.dontignorediabetes.com.au. Alternatively, contact the information line
on 1300 136 588 or visit Diabetes Australia – Victoria’s website, at
www.dav.org.au.
Dr Sykes concluded, “I urge local people to
heed the advice of the 2005 National Diabetes Week campaign and ‘Don’t
Ignore Diabetes’.”
