The four year old kindergarten curriculum is based on the knowledge that young children learn through play.  Play is the children’s work through which they learn and make sense of the world around them.  Our play based curriculum is child-oriented; emerging from the child’s current interests, needs and development levels.  We find that kindergarten-aged children learn most readily when the curriculum is relevant to their lives.

Our play based curriculum is interactive and exploratory involving interaction with a rich variety of sensory materials—mud, sand, paint; equipment—puzzles, lego, climbing, people, animals, music.  We also incorporate as many ‘real life’, meaningful play experiences as possible (wood work, sewing etc).  As teachers, our first priority is to instill a love and appreciation for meaningful learning, thus helping to ensure children reach their full potential in later years.

It is through this child-oriented play based curriculum that children gain a range of social, emotional, cognitive, language and motor skills.

We plan and evaluate the program fortnightly, setting group objectives.  This general plan is displayed on the program board in the kindergarten foyer.  We also plan for individual children on a regular basis, devising individual objectives based on our observations or through other information from the child’s parents/guardians.  With this in mind, it is important to be kept informed about any issues/information pertaining to your child.

It is our aim when devising individual program objectives to build on areas of strength, and encourage a child in any area(s) that they may feel as skilful in/confident about.  Overall, the kindergarten curriculum places a large emphasis on building self-esteem and self-confidence in young children.

Through regular use of photographs we are also able to capture and document important moments of your child's learning.  Photographs, examples of children’s work and/or project updates are posted and regularly updated on the program board.
