Where To Buy I recommend that you read through the sections on Aircraft, Engines and Radios and perhaps chat to a few people out at the club who are not trying to sell you anything as a bit of a guide before you go shopping. There are a few places on the Sunshine Coast to get all the goodies you need. A couple of our members used to have hobby shops and still operate from home. Mr Toys Toyworld in Kawana (next to Harvey Norman) have a comprehensive radio control hobby section. Russell is there during the week and Wes is there on Saturdays. Both these guys are good helicopter and fixed wing flyers and are very helpful. Obviously they are not too keen to work on gear that has been bought on Ebay etc but if you support them they will certainly support you. Ron deChastel has been in the hobby almost before the Wright Brothers flew, and keeps a good stock of nearly everything you require. Certainly all the things you need to get into the air. Ron calls himself R.G. Aero Services and you can find him and his lovely wife Irene at No 87 Oceanic Drive Warana. It's a good idea to give him a ring before you go there to make sure he is going to be home, he is retired so he usually is there. You can get Ron on 07 5493 3908. Nowadays Ron is also trying to retire from his hobby business but he is still always ready to help. Toyworld Nambour cnr Howard & Ann streets Nambour stock some aircraft bits and pieces. They have quite a bit of boat gear and are regular boating modelers. You can get them on Ph 5441 301 Be a little careful when buying fuel from 'Toy' shops as their mix is mainly for cars which run a lower oil content then we do, just make sure you have around the 18%-20% oil mix. Before you buy anything check out the prices around the traps. Phone a few hobby shops in the major Cities, look in Airborne magazine which carry ads for all the gear, and of course you can browse around on the net. You will find Ron and the Kawana Toyworld very competitive with the City prices. You also have to consider freight charges from elsewhere and the hassle with any warranty claims etc. Plus you can chat to these guys about what's available and any problems you might have putting it all together. For second hand gear, keep an eye out on the Club notice boards, look in the trading post under Hobbies - Remote Control or put the word around the Club that you are looking. Check out other Clubs webpages, some have Buy/Sell sections. Keep an eye on the pawn brokers and auctions, they sometimes get equipment in. If you are desperate put an ad in the paper, there are hundreds of radio control setups in sheds, under beds up in cupboards which people will get rid of if they know you want it. If you are going to buy second hand try and get an experienced modeler to look it over before your part with your dollars. It's very easy to spend quite a bit of money and still have nothing to fly. |
