Learning Procedures The following are the minimum requirements before going solo. Your instructor MUST at least teach you the following procedures. If they miss anything you should bring it to their attention what they have missed, you're the one who will be checked out at the end. Once your instructor thinks you are ready to go solo he will hand you over to a certified MAAA Instructor for a checkout. Once you pass your checkout you are solo and also qualify for your MAAA Bronze Wings. These are the procedures you need to know.
1. A clear understanding of all the rules of the Club.
2. Demonstrate a clear understanding of all the legal frequencies used in Australia for aero modeling and how they are abbreviated into channel identification. Explain what bandwidth testing is and when it is required.
3. A clear understanding on the usage of the frequency key system, including what is required to be displayed on a key, when a key should and shouldn't be in the frequency board, where the key and radio are stored when not in use, and who is allowed to place/remove the key in the frequency board.
4. Explain what should be done when you first arrive at the field if you have any transmitters with you.
5. Indicate the location of the emergency equipment (First Aid, Fire Blanket and Extinguisher).
6. Indicate the location of the following:
7. Demonstrate the flight controls on the transmitter and on the model. Identify that control direction is correct of all flight controls. 8. Demonstrate a thorough inspection of the model including:
9. Explain the starting procedures of the engine, including position of the model and starting equipment, securing the model, position of other models and bystanders, fueling of the model, turning the engine over, operation of the mixture controls, throttle position.
10. Demonstrate starting the engine.
11. Demonstrate tuning the engine. Checking mixture settings for throttle response, idle, mid range, full power, and takeoff/climbing.
12. Demonstrate taxiing the model to the pilots flightline including where to start from, where to stand during taxiing, speed, position of the elevator, and where to stop.
13. Demonstrate a visual inspection for other models in the sky, communication with other flyers on the pilots flightline before taxing onto the runway. Checking of flight controls and engine response before entering the runway.
14. Taxiing and position of the model to correct the position for takeoff allowing for wind direction and distance required for takeoff.
15. Demonstrate the procedure of takeoff including prior communication with other flyers, gradual throttle control, maintaining heading, lift off position, lift off speed, correct climb out angle and position before first turn.
16. Demonstrate the following flying maneuvers:
17. Demonstrate collecting the model from the flying area if it is not able to taxi back under it's own power including communication with other flyers. 18. Demonstrate taxiing back to pit area including, where to stand, speed, where to stop and shutting down the engine.
19. Demonstrate procedure with the transmitter after flight.
