Lake Cardross and the Adjoining State Forest

Key Species:
This lake is the most reliable spot in the district to see Great Crested Grebe, and depending on water levels in some years it is also good for other water-birds. The adjoining State Forest is also sometimes very good for bush birds – particularly when the mallee or mistletoe is flowering.

How to Get There :
Start at the roundabout at the Calder/Sturt Highways intersection (15th St. & Deakin Ave). (Map point A).
Go towards Irymple (Melbourne), turn right into Benetook Ave. (Map point B).

Proceed along Benetook Ave, past Koorlong Store to Magnum Ave which is a gravel road on the left at the start of a curve right.
(Section 11.9km, Total 13.8km)
Go along Magnum Ave, to a narrow gravel track on left with hand-painted sign "SSAA"
(Section 1.3km, Total 15.0km)
Turn into this track, and park within next 100 to 300 metres. (Map point C).
State Forest (or Crown Land) Good Mallee area, with some Belah etc. Good birding in some years.

Facilities:
None, but part of area is State Forest and a BOCA camp has been held there under DSE permit.
