There are a number of Stroke Support Groups throughout Victoria in both Metropolitan and Country locations.
The groups meet at different times of the month and at varying frequencies depending on the needs of their members. Some meet weekly, fortnightly, others meet once a month and
all on varying days of the week.
Membership of a Stroke Support Groups provides mutual peer-to-peer emotional, social, physical support and friendship.
Members can gain a good deal of benefit and support from a stroke group.
One of our members recently wrote the following regarding his feelings towards
his own support group :-
"WHAT DOES THE STROKE GROUP MEAN TO ME?
It is very supportive, sharing with people of all ages, all walks of life.
Sharing in fellowship and helping one another, learning about each others lives, before and after
their stroke, a very concerned group. The carers within the group, whether partners or not, are
very helpful to everybody all the time.
My wife, partner and carer, is a trained carer and the group provides an opportunity to share the
ups and downs with other carers.
We can cry together and achieve the greatest thing - WE CAN LAUGH TOGETHER."
Nothing could better describe the purpose of a support group than the expression of this
person's own feeling about their group.
People need a great deal of support after a stroke and emotional support is often overlooked. Emotional support is
readily available from others within the group who have been affected by stroke, directly or indirectly.
