school and Pre-university
Edward studied at chinese primary and
secondary school (Yuk Choy SRJK & SMJK) in Ipoh, Perak, West Malaysia from
age 7 to 18. In primary school, he won best math student in year 3 and year 5.
He was an assistant class leader in year 6.
At secondary school, he was a boy scout, a school prefect, program chairman of Leo Club, a leading player of school badminton squad, secretary of English society and arts club. Edward was also a member of '5 science 1' soccer team who won 1984 intra-school soccer competition championship. Edward was awarded the best science exam result for SRP exam (national year 10 exam) and excellency award for achieving 5 As in SPM (national year 12 exam, one of the top 5 students in Yuk Choy that year) by Yuk Choy Secondary School.
After SPM (equivalent to Cambridge 'O' Level) exam, Edward continued his studies at Anderson High School for pre-university study (equivalent to Cambridge 'A' Level). Edward was the team leader of a 'blue' squash team who won 1985 intra-school squash competition championship.
During school holidays, besides helping out his dad in his small hostel
business (Perak Taipu Association), Edward took out opportunities to experience
real working life by working in several establishments including:
- a department store - MetroJaya as toys sales assistant,
- bed and furnishing shop - Kwong Fatt as promoter,
- Ford automobile components distributor as management trainee; and
- FAMA (Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority) - as a market surveyer
traveling around restaurants and hotels within Perak state to collect vegetable
consumption data for market analysis.
Edward felt that these experiences were eye-opener and very helpful in
character development and professional careers.
Edward went to Tunku Abdul Rahman College (prior to founding of Tunku Abdul Rahman University)
to complete Diploma (now Advanced Diploma) in Materials Engineering
and EC part II Exam (now Graduate Diploma) in Mechanical Engineering with Engineering Council UK.
Edward completed a thesis entitled "Quality
Management in Malaysian Manufacturing Industry" in conjunction with Yoonsteel Foundry.
During his undergraduate years Edward worked for three months as an industrial trainee for a foundry. He also worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant located in Kuala Lumpur Zoo during school holidays.

Postgraduate
Edward secured an engineer position during final months of undergraduate study and had worked for a short period as a quality assurance engineer for a semiconductor assembly
plant in Malaysia. He was the head of the Incoming Goods Inspection department,
managing about ten supervisors and workers. He left the job when he was offered
a place to study for a MSc degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering
at The University of
Warwick, UK (link to The Guardian 2008-09 UK
university rankings and UK top research universities).
Edward's thesis entitled "Specify and
Implement Changes to Improve Production Efficiency in NEFAB UK Ltd", and was completed in conjunction with Warwick Manufacturing Group and
a multinational packaging manufacturing company in Northampton, England.
Doctorate
Edward completed a PhD in Business
Management from Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship, Swinburne
University of Technology (link to official 2005 Australian University Ranking) under Australian
Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship. Edward's thesis entitled 'Modelling and
Measuring Relationships between IT-Business Strategic Alignment and Performance
Outcomes' was a study on the relationships between information technology (IT)
as an enabler of corporate strategy implementation and the impact of IT on
competitive advantages on companies in Australia.
