Parish History
The Parish of St
Oswald's Glen Iris came into being in 1925, and was named in honour
of St. Oswald, King of Northumbria (642AD).
The first service was conducted in the Glen Iris state school on the
4th October 1925, and regular worship continued there until the 19th
June 1927.
The present site was purchased in February 1926. Construction of the
church and parish hall commenced, with the dedication ceremony being
performed on the 25th June 1927.
An expanding congregation necessitated the building of the present church,
which was dedicated on the 31st August 1957.
Fire destroyed the old parish hall in March 1962,1t was replaced by
the present complex which was dedicated on the 120 July 1964.
Archbishop David Penman conducted the consecration of the church on
the 9th August 1987.
The interior of the church has been enhanced with the removal of the
choir stalls, the bringing forward of the altar, installation of the
crucifix, stained glass windows, sculptures and the Knud Smenge organ.
