THE
CHURCH
The original St Johns church was built in 1927 and
located off City Road not far from the present
church. The site was chosen
because of its central location and access to public transport. That
building was demolished in 1989 to make way for the Southgate
development. The beautiful, modern church building was designed by
David Cole, an architect from Buchan, Laird and Bawden.
The design of the
church links architecturally with the Southgate complex.
Whilst
primarily a centre for worship, St Johns was designed to serve a range of
purposes. It is used as a venue for concerts and a centre for
meetings and functions. For its many visitors
the church provides a place for friendship and support.
THE cross
Made of River Redgum, the cross is the central symbol of the Christian
faith and dominates the wall behind the altar. During the year the
cross is draped in colours symbolising the seasons and themes in the life
of the church.
candle and flower stands
These are made of pattinated copper. They were designed and made by Ms
Jackie Staude, a local metalwork artist.
paraments (Alter Cover)
Designed by Mark Janetzki and made by Ora Molenaar in Melbourne. The
colour and design are changed with the draping of the cross.
stained glass windows
Two of the windows from the original church are used in the chapel. The
newer windows use ten different symbols commonly used to depict the
Christian faith.
