1st Meeting at New Venue - 20 February, 2008

Our First Meeting

It started on Tuesday, 19th February ’08 on a quite a hot evening. The first thing I noticed entering the building was that it was cool. The air-conditioning was refreshing after coming from the heat. We had a bit of a rat around for mugs, plates, spoons etc. and put a couple of jugs of water into the freezer.

A member bought a couple of bottles of cordial another a new box of biscuits, the old International Rot was replaced by a top quality coffee and better tea was purchased. Nothing is too good for the recovering addict so we got the good stuff, including the Tim Tams.

The shares were great! Really positive and recovery focused. The rehab group were great. Their sharing from the heart took us back to those difficult early days and the hope for a better future. Other group members shared on the goals they are striving to achieve, often in the face of significant personal difficulties.

All up there were 13 members at the meeting with several regulars not in attendance tonight. After the meeting there was considerable positive comment, not just on the venue, but the vibe of the meeting and the shares. All in all our first meeting at our new home was a rip roaring success and those of us who had concerns about the transition to the Livingstreams Centre breathed a deep sigh of relief and thanked our HP that irrespective of some challenging months accommodation wise, we saw it through and its all go from here.

Group Initiatives

Having stable home means we can now get on with doing the things we've wanted to do for a good while. Group Conscious decided to invite guest speakers to provide some variety and ES&H from members who do meetings in other areas. Typically we would not hear these members share at eastern suburbs meetings. It was also felt that greater variety would also be valuable for people from the rehab which attends the group each week. At this stage guest speakers are likely to be invited fortnightly. One week will be a share on their personal experience with the second guest sharing on one of the steps a couple opf weeks later. Those who share their personal experience will be invited back to share on a step and visa versa.

Another initiative the group considered was spending some time doing step work before the meeting in a smaller room that is also available to us. This is an idea the Group Conscience viewed as desirable some time ago and now it is a possibility if members want it to be a goer. Alternately, we can have 45 minutes or so before the start of the meeting doing a Basic Text study. Stay tuned its all about to happen.
