Stawell Biarri Group for Genealogy Inc

About our Group:

The Group was formed in 1987. At that time the Victorian government had proposed adoption of aboriginal names for the Grampians (Gariwerd) and Halls Gap (Budja Budja) and the group's founders thought it appropriate to include the aboriginal word "Biarri", which means to search or to hunt, in its name. So the "Stawell (Biarri) Group of the Genealogical Society of Victoria" was formed. The name was later changed to "Stawell Biarri Group for Genealogy Inc.". The word "Biarri" is pronounced bee-ah-ree.

The Stawell Biarri Group for Genealogy Inc. is a Member Society of Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc.and has about 70 members dedicated to genealogy and family history research in the Stawell district and throughout the world. The group provides a range of services, including a very economical research service.

Committee Meetings:

The Management Committee is responsible for the business and affairs of the Group. Quarterly meetings are held at the Stawell Library during February, May, August and November. The President has power to call Special Meetings of the Management Committee.

Services:

Research::

• We undertake research and also provide free research assistance and advice (See our "Research" Page.)

Cemetery Photographs:

For burials in the Pleasant Creek (Stawell) Cemetery we will locate a grave and provide photographs in one of two formats.

• Digital photographs emailed to you at a cost of $2 per A4 sheet; or
• A postcard sized print on glossy paper mounted in an A5 card folder plus a full transcription of any headstone for an all-inclusive cost of $15.00 for a single grave site.
• We are happy to quote on providing photographs of graves in other cemeteries in the district.

Postcard:

• We have produced a full-colour postcard, based on Will Rees oil painting "The Reefs 1859", copies of which are for sale at a cost of $1.50 plus p&p if applicable.

Books:

• Victoria's Wonderland: A Grampians history, Comp. Halls Gap & Grampians Historical Society. $20 + $3 p+h if applicable
• Family Tree Writing Tips: Writing Interesting Family Histories, Carol Baxter, St Ives NSW, 2009. $20 + $3 p+h if applicable
  
• Slorach's from Scotland, Decendants of John and Jessie, compiled by Beryl Cox. $10 + $3 p+h if applicable
  
• A Range of Views of Jallukar and Bellellen, Isabel Armer. $15 + $3 p+h.

Publications

• Members' Surname Interest Directory, with periodic updates. The current edition is available on the 'Surnames' page of this site and also available in hard copy format.
• Newsletter, "The Reefs Rumblings", comprising eight A4 pages, published during February, May, August and November of each year, although two editions are sometimes rolled into one. This newsletter is free to members and to genealogy/family history groups which agree to reciprocate by sending us a free copy of their regular newsletter. Single issues can also be purchased for $A2.50 per copy, including postage within Australia.
