Paisley Park Master Plan beginning - At LAST!

After a lengthy delay, SPPAG is pleased that the Paisley Park Master Plan is going ahead (June 2005).  We await council's notification of the first meeting.

SPPAG Saves Paisley Park!

Council resolved not to sell Paisley Park at their Special Council Meeting on 18 November 2003.  Well done to all residents!

The Save Paisley Park Action Group (SPPAG) is very pleased we were able to save Paisley Park from being sold, and reiterates its support of the new preferred site and the community consultation process.

The Hobsons Bay community should remember that the Blackshaw Ward Councillors (Crs. Brad Matheson and Bill Baarini) put the park on sale in the first place.  Their failed attempt to sell our park is believed to have cost Hobsons Bay residents approximately $70,000 in the last 6 months alone.

The community should remember the division their proposal caused and the overwhelming public outcry against the sale as evidenced at the special council meeting to hear community submissions on 9 September.  Nor should we forget the allegations of racism just because residents dared speak out to save our park.

Let's give credit where credit's due.  The community is the real heroes of Paisley Park.  Following 9 September council realised they couldn't sell Paisley Park.  SPPAG forced the council to establish a liaison committee and to adhere to a controlled process to assess alternate sites for the mosque and community centre.  Through this group and with a lot of hard work we proved we were genuine about supporting the Islamic community to find a site for their place of worship.

We're glad council has now resolved to include representatives from Blenheim Rd in the Mosque Liaison Committee to look more closely at the new preferred site.  We look forward to continuing our support of the community and intend to continue conducting community consultations which were so lacking until SPPAG came along.

Community Consultation Meeting

7pm.  14th October 2003
Paisley Park - Altona North Bowling Club

ALL WELCOME!

Minutes of the 9 Sept 03 Council Meeting

The Council's official minutes of the council meeting to hear community submissions about the sale of a portion of Paisley Park are now available here.  These minutes reflect a very strong case for the retention of the whole of Paisley Park and for a Master Plan to be commissioned.

The minutes also reflect overwhelming support for a mosque in the local area, albeit not on parkland.

SPPAG's Mosque Strategic Plan - 16 Sept 03

The Save Paisley Park Action Group (SPPAG) has submitted a detailed plan to Council for the establishment of a Mosque Working Group and its Strategic Plan to find an appropriate site for the Islamic Community Centre and Mosque and to rebuild community relationships.

The plan has been welcomed by council, which will consider the proposal over the next few days.  Please go to our 'submissions' page to read the Mosque Working Group Strategic Plan.

Council Hearings - 9 Sept 03

The Council heard oral presentations in support of submissions regarding the sale of a portion of Paisley Park on 9 September 03.  The meeting was well attended, will a vast majority rejecting the sale of parkland but also supporting the construction of an Islamic Community Centre and Mosque within the municipality.

Please go to our 'submissions' page to see what SPPAG had to say.
