Election
promises
In his last election campaign, Paul Klisaris pledged ..to
do all it takes to make Federation Park come true.
In
one of his election pamphlets a supporter claimed Paul Klisaris
...believes in preserving our open space and will not stop
until our dream comes true. We cannot afford to lose Paul Klisaris
from Monash Council.
What
has he done?
According to his letter
to the Monash Journal on Nov 5 this year, Cr Klisaris claims the
following involvement in efforts to save the land as public space:
In
April last year a meeting was organised with Clayton MP Hong Lim,
his staff and an advisor to the then Education Minister Mary Delahunty.
Following the meeting, the impression of those present was that
the request of the Federation Park Committee was likely to be realised.
In
addition to this meeting, City of Monash staff had been meeting
Education Department advisers to stress the importance of the value
of retaining the surplus land at Riley Street for open space.
Unfortunately,
the department did not share council's view.
Cr
Klisaris goes on to say that My support in maintaining this
land in public hands has not once wavered. There may be some alternative
approaches that the Government bodies may apply to overturn this
decision....I am happy and willing to listen to any further alternatives.
Cr
Klisaris
was invited to attend our public
rally in June 2002 but failed to attend.
Cr
Klisaris
was invited to attend our public meeting
in October 2002. He neither responded to the invitation nor attended
the meeting. The meeting passed a motion to send a letter expressing
the community's disgust at his failure to attend and give us the support
he has promised.
At
its Nov 12th meeting (2002) Monash
council considered a proposal to rezone the old Oakleigh South Primary
site in Beryl Avenue for residential development. Cr Felicity Smith
moved a motion to defer the rezoning to give time for councillors
to negotiate with state government departments in regard to both
the Beryl Avenue and Riley Street (Federation Park) land. Cr Klisaris
seconded the motion and council passed it.
Cr
Klisaris made
a speech in favour of open space and community involvement in decision-making,
drawing council's attention to the recently released Bracks government
open space policies.
