The State Library User Organisations' Council Inc was formed in 1998 as the State Library Development Committee. The incentive for establishing the organisation at that time was a crisis apparent to Library users in policy, funding and development of the State Library of Victoria.  The aims and objectives of the organisation continue to be relevant.

The organisation brings together groups of people in the fields of history, genealogy, heritage, architecture, academia.  The members of these organisations use the State Library on a regular basis and care for its future as an important cultural institution in the State of Victoria, Australia.

Goals

  • To promote the development of the State Library Collection as a national resource, and its proper conservation, accessibility, promotion and understanding

  • To promote the State Library as a major cultural venue

  • To ensure the provision of functionally satisfactory and high quality facilities for Library users in general and for special interest groups

  • To secure the funding and promote the management of the Library on a basis which will place maximum importance on the collection and its users, encourage commitment, specialisation and professional development in the staff, and provide for the most efficient interaction with the public

  • To bring about a development on the site of the highest quality, with proper provision for the future of the Library, and for optimum conservation of the major historic elements identified by the National Trust
