Bagh Project

Bagh

Bagh is in the western mountain ranges of the Hindu Kush system at around 1,200 metres above sea level. It is situated approximately 46Km from Rawalakot and is linked to Muzaffarabad by two torturous mountain roads that twist through valleys, climb steep passes and cut across precipitous ridges. One road travels via Sudhan Gali (80Km), the other through Kohala (97Km); both journeys take around 4-hours to complete.

About the Bagh Project

During the 2005 Kashmir earthquake much of Bagh was heavily damaged and there was substantial loss of life. Most surviving buildings need to be substantially repaired or demolished.

An existing social welfare program is located in Bagh where vulnerable women and girls undertake vocational training in handcrafts. Currently this training program is situated in inadequate tent accommodation as due to earthquake damage, no permanent structure is currently available.

Shelter Aid Australia Inc. has identified a need to donate A$4000 - $5000 to enable the construction of a permanent facility for this program. We are currently awaiting a formal ‘Proposal of Need’ from the Social Welfare ministry in Bagh. Local coordinators at the Bagh, Muzaffarabad and Islamabad levels will oversee construction of the building. At this stage the Bagh Project will be a ‘Once-off’ donation. Follow-up monthly reports from the Social Welfare ministry would be sent to Shelter Aid Australia Inc. (click to report)
