SES Leongatha Activities & Events

Unit Activities

Leongatha SES has a wide range of roles including planning for and responding to floods, severe storms, earthquakes, road accident rescue & search and rescue. We also provide support to Police, Ambulance & the CFA. During major events such as flooding or severe storms, we often also work closely with both local shires & the other emergency services. Leongatha SES is an accredited road rescue unit and as such we are part of the VicSES road rescue network, the largest in Australia.

Our members are available to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, every day.

You won't just see us at emergencies, Leongatha SES run a Driver Reviver caravan every long weekend and special holidays. We encourage drivers to stop and take a break with a free cuppa, biscuits, & perhaps a chat with our friendly volunteers. Remember - taking a break during a long drive can save lives.

In addition we run open days at our unit headquarters in Leongatha & run an SES cadet program for juniors. You will also see us running or participating in a large number of community activities such as expo's, shows, safety awareness programs and of course the sausage sizzles that we regularly run at Michael's IGA stores in Leongatha & Korumburra.

Events & Incidents

Leongatha SES attend about 100 incident call outs & events each year and while many of these are for community safety & awareness purposes, our primary function is responding to emergency call outs & to assist with wind & storm damage. The majority of call outs are for wind and storm damage, in fact on one single day in 2008, our unit alone received 48 calls for assistance resulting from a severe storm that hit Leongatha & surrounding towns.

We also attend about 15 MVA's each year, requiring us to rescue people from car & truck wrecks. Other call outs can be as diverse as rescuing pets, search & rescue, assisting police with evidence searches & providing lighting at the Phillip Island Grand Prix.
