Gyula (Jules) Cseszkó joined the Southeastern Philharmonia as its Director in July 2008. Born in Adelaide to Hungarian and Dutch parents, Jules obtained a Bachelor degree in Music Performance (Viola) and as a young man made his conducting debut at the Adelaide Town Hall. Conductor Henry Krips commented after observing Jules at this performance, that the "young man showed great promise". After leaving music for over a decade of preaching, Jules decided to return to music and pursue his childhood dream of conducting. He began teaching viola at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide and was Assistant Director for Marie Clarke Concert Choir production of Romberg's Desert Song. He also formed the Marlene Orchestra (named after his beloved wife’s middle name) which performed two concerts and provided backing tracks for a pop CD, and the Adelaide orchestral premiere of Guy Noble’s flute concerto. Jules moved with his family to Melbourne in 2002 to commence a Master's degree in Conducting at Melbourne University, studying under Professor John Hopkins OBE on a Research Training Scholarship, where he conducted the Melbourne University Orchestra on numerous occasions. This was an empowering experience - significant performances included the 2002 Geelong Advertiser's Concerto Competition, an amazing program comprising the Barber Violin Concerto, the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 and the Vine Piano Concerto. Other performances include the Melbourne premier performance of Natalie Williams' Chambers of the South, Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 27, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Jules has a love for young people, and directed many school ensembles, including the Victorian State Music Camp (2008), Westbourne Grammar School Orchestra, St Paul’s Grammar School Orchestra in Warragul, Canterbury Girls Secondary College Orchestra, Canterbury Primary School Orchestra, and directed the Henri Touzeau Strings and the Margaret Sutherland Strings at Melbourne Youth Music. He also spent two years from mid-2003 conducting and teaching in America, at the Greater Atlanta Christian School. He has worked as Tutor for Melbourne University Undergraduate Conducting Class, and he has served as Conductor and Manager of the University's Conductor's Orchestra. A conducting tour in America is planned for 2009, including conducting the Daytona Solisti in Florida. Jules has also studied with conductors Nicholas Braithwaite, Carl Crossin, Shalom Ronly-Riklis, Carlo Felice Cillario, Denis Vaughan and Graham Abbott. As an instrumentalist, he has led the viola section for Melbourne Opera Company for two years. With an interest in community music making, Jules conducted the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra, the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Preston Symphony Orchestra, the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra, Apollo Health Music Society, the Diamond Valley & Eltham Community Orchestra , and for 2007, was engaged as the permanent conductor of both the Frankston Symphony and the Mornington Peninsula Chorale after stepping in for the last rehearsal to conduct two performances Haydn's Oratorio The Creation. His choral experience extends to conducting the Mornington Peninsula Chorale for a year, has conducted the Monash Chorale. Since leaving the Southeastern Philharmonia, Jules has become the Director of the Maroondah Singers. | ||
