The Complete Rifleman

These photos show the dress standards adopted by the 2/95th. The haversack and waterbottle straps are neatly aligned and over the top of the cartidge box strap (there appears to be no historical evidence to guide this arrangement but equipment usage suggests this layout was used). The cartridge box and haversack are worn as far to the rear as conveniently possible. Cross straps go under the sword belt but the powderhorn cords remain outside; cross straps go under the epaulets. The knapsack (Trotter backpack) straps go over the epaulets and all other equipment. The wisk and vent pick (seen here hanging on the right hand side of the sword belt) can be attached at the rifleman's discretion. Trousers are tucked into the gaiters on parade but may be outside when campaigning. Billhooks (a small axe) may be worn on the sword belt or, as shown here, strapped to the top of the Trotter pack.
