The 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot
2nd Battalion

About Us

Getting around the sentry?
A flourishing heritage interest in Anglo-European history, and in particular the Napoleonic Wars, has resulted in the formation of numerous living history re-enactment groups around the world. Portraying this period in Australia are reenactment groups representing the following British units:
  • 40th Regiment of Foot
  • 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch)
  • 73rd Regiment of Foot
  • 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion

These Regiments hold numerous battle honours and a common bond of service. However the first three listed above wore the red coats of the Line Regiments, and were armed with smoothbore Brown Bess muskets. They have all been depicted most admirably in the annals of world military history.

Green Jackets
Not so frequently portrayed, nevertheless well documented, were the Green Jackets. The dark green clad companies of the riflemen, such as the 5th and 6th Battalions of the 60th Regiment, the 95th Rifles and the 1st & 2nd Light Battalions of the King's German Legion were all equipped with the redoubtable Baker Rifle. All were usually deployed scouting in advance of the red-coated line regiments, or skirmishing in the fashion of light infantry.

Nicknamed "Grasshoppers" by the French (one in every bush), these men in rifle green (an early camouflage) are today represented world-wide by groups of re-enactors formed in the United Kingdom, Germany, North America, Germany and Australia.

Local Units
The Australian battalion, 2nd 95th, was formed in 1996 in Victoria. We have active members in and around the Melbourne and Sydney areas. The unit is in close contact with fellow Rifle units overseas. We have around 15 uniformed riflemen, and many have family and partners suitably costumed for the period.

We are an incorporated body, with constitution, elected office bearers and committee. We conduct regular committee meetings and the mandatory AGM.

"The Bugle Call" is our regularly published newsletter for members. You are invited to contribute articles for publication. Contact our editor David Sadler at The Bugle Call

Drill
All members are keen re-enactors who participate in regular drill practice. Drill venues include a range of heritage listed properties in Melbourne and Sydney, and drill days are often incorporated with other scheduled events. Drill days and events are usually conducted in conjunction with other Napoleonic re-enactment units, adding to the interest and camaraderie. Regular firing of blank cartridges, and even the odd skirmish or two, are conducted by prior arrangement.

The skills honed by frequent drill are displayed at parades and public displays. Regular events include the annual Military Encampment held at Taminick in northern Victoria each October, which ranks highly on every re-enactor's calendar. Other Napoleonic re-enactments are held from time to time. In the past, venues have included the grounds of Mont de Lancey Historic House at Wandin, and Flagstaff Hill in Victoria; and Old Sydney Town and Lithgow in NSW.

International Re-enactment Events
Members of the 2/95th have joined other Napoleonic re-enactment units from around the world, re-enacting the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium. Most recently, five uniformed, and four family members attended the 190th anniversary in 2005. Over the next few years a number of Napoleonic 200th anniversary events are being planned, and our members will be involved in some of these.

Resources
Our Quartermaster carries most of the rifleman's accoutrements in store. He will assist prospective members to kit up with the right equipment and uniform. A "95th Rifles Ladies Book" is available to assist female members with period costume, jewellery and accessories. A drill manual is available and a video of our local group demonstrating drill procedure can be purchased at nominal cost.
