Smart Appropriation
{Jonah Jones}

Last issue the CSA Newsletter featured the article on the Denton Corker Marshall's freeway sculpture installation, calling it The Big Cheese Stick. Jonah Jones, Former head of the ACAF and Art Entrepreneur has a different opinion and a different title, naming it Smart Appropriation.

Jeffrey Smart, one of Australia's leading painters, is known (and indeed famous) throughout the world for his meticulously executed and colourfully rendered streetscapes and is the inspiration for the DCM work of yellow stick, red sticks, mustard Frank Gehry Wall, et al. With the possible exception of the back (northern) wall of the new Museum of Victoria, it is the firm's best work. It would have to rank as one of Melbourne's most important sculptural installations and will become one of the great city gateways of the world. Jeffrey Smart should be acknowledged.
