Last Meeting Les Jackson was the Rotarian behind the badge at this meeting. He was born in Myrtleford. Went to primary and secondary school in Wangaratta and Myrtleford. Became an apprentice carpenter to his father. Met and married Mary in Wangaratta. Decided to try teaching but the credit squeeze hit the building industry in the early 60's. Went to Melbourne for two years to train for this. Came to Sale for a little while he thought but taught for 20 years at the TAFE and 6 years in a school environment. He retired briefly but is now working with Peter Kluge in the surveying business 5 days a week and under pressure to work 6 days. Les and Mary have two children. We heard from Colin Hams and his son about their dog breeding business at Stradbroke. They produce designer mongrels as Colin put it. Their business was featured on a recent Burke's Backyard program and this segment was shown to the meeting. They have 500 breeding dogs and over Christmas 2003 there were 1000 dogs on the property. It is interesting that the RSPCA opposes these kinds of operations. They had four puppies to show us and our hearts all melted.
Adrian Rhys, Director and part owner of Patties Bakery will explain the work that went into the purchase of Four and Twenty Pies and tell us about the huge expansion that has taken place at their factory. Quotes: Things don't really change, they just move on - P.K.SHAW Registration was a reasonably smooth process aided by a very helpful lady, Merle McCubbin from Berwick Club, who assisted us in trying to ensure that Les and Mary were booked in to the President's breakfast on the following morning. With her assistance that problem and a couple of others were sorted out. The evening program was of a very high standard. Kerrie and I made sure Sale Central's presence was felt by yelling out "up the back" when the club's name was announced during the roll call. After being welcomed by the Mayor of Greater Bendigo, the DG, Ray Martin plus all and sundry, we were addressed first by the Rotary International President's Personal Representative, PDG Brian Guest from WA. He gave an excellent summary of Rotary's current mission. Kerry Cue a well-known comedian and former schoolteacher followed him. She was the first of the keynote speakers to talk on the conference theme Young and Free. Her speech was relaxed and extraordinarily funny. She drew on her life growing up in Kyneton with a policeman father, her years at Melbourne University and later as a teacher and author. She currently writes for the Herald Sun and The Advertiser (Adelaide). She emphasised the need to learn how to communicate with young people and illustrated this with many humorous examples. The conference theme song received its first airing as we left the venue on Friday night. It was "Always look on the bright side of life" from the Life of Brian. We were all singing it by the end of the weekend. Saturday dawned bright, warm and sunny. This was the real business day of the conference where we heard presentations from the Assistant Governors about the activities of clubs in their areas. We also heard about district projects currently being promoted. The new generations group outlined in detail all the youth activities being carried out within the District. Rotary is really switched on in this part of the world! Keynote speakers included Jim Stynes, former Melbourne AFL player who now works with young people trying to get them to reflect on who they are and what their potential might be. He had us do an exercise in which we recalled our past and the defining moments in our lives. All this was to help us understand who we are. This exercise was a moving experience and difficult to explain. The Saturday night dinner had a bush theme. We dressed as best we could to match the theme. Trevor and Liz had corks on their hats the rest of us had checked shirts. The food was good but slow in coming and there at least three bottles of red on our table of 8. That excellent international singing group Pot Pourri entertained us. A tear or two was shed when they sang We are Australian. There was also much singing and dancing. Sunday brought a new raft of speakers and presentations including the Shelter Boxes by the Endeavour Hills club. This involves clubs sponsoring a box at the rate of $1100 for deployment to disaster areas. The boxes contained 10 sleeping bags, a three-roomed tent, a spade and water purification tablets for 6 months. We also heard from Professor Don Marshall who spoke to us about Interplast which arranges for plastic surgeons to perform operations in our region of the world. After the presentation it was announced that District 9820 would sponsor four team visits at the rate of $32000 each. Proceedings concluded with a humorous presentation by the Exchange Students. It was a great conference and DG Ray Martin and the Berwick Club are to be congratulated. Kerrie and I have be involved with organising conferences in District 9710 and it was great to be "passengers" this time. The 2005 centenary conference will be held at Shepparton over the weekend
of 11-13 February 2005. The theme will be Celebrate Rotary - 100 years.
