Jottings
from
Director
John Dear Friends in Rotary, in life in general, if we are to achieve anything - to make a difference - we need to plan ahead. Did you know that December has now been designated a time to recognise the Family of Rotary? I feel that a worthwhile gesture would be for each Rotary club to invite to their end-of-year celebration function all partners of deceased Rotarians.
With plenty of notice, which means "thinking and reflection time" you might find a strong roll-up from that group in your club. I would also seriously consider inviting former Youth Exchange students, especially of 10 or 20 years ago.
The fellowship would be significant and the indication to these people that members of your club care invaluable. Simple fellowship with friends, and to renew friendships shows Rotary working locally in the strongest way. Paul Harris said, "Fellowship is wonderful: it illuminates pathways, spreads good cheer and is worth a high price." Another group in the New Zealand and Australian-based Districts are the members of our Probus clubs.
In December, for that celebration, I believe it would be a wonderful gesture for each Rotary club to invite the executive members and their partners from each of the Probus clubs your club has initiated. These people would be over the moon at the gesture of friendship.

Last Week's Meeting

Last week we farewelled Margaret and Ted Pickering as they go off to England to work for a year or two. Hugo Huygens presented Margaret, who is a nurse, with various medical accoutrements before she spoke to the assembled company about how she came to find a job and apply for a work visa in the UK. Of particular interest was the bureaucracy she had to fight her way through to get a work permit. It showed that she had true grit to last the distance and get the work permit which she has only had in her possession for a couple of weeks.

After thanking Rotary for a great time over the years Ted then complained that he was being pushed out of his comfort zone because of the bragging of several members who had returned from overseas extolling the virtues of world travel. In effect he had been sucked in by their experiences. He particularly singled out the Watsons and the Morrissys. There was little sympathy in the meeting for his predicament.

Ted went on to describe the city of Bristol where he and Margaret would be living. He left some samples of Bristolean language on the tables for us to practice for when he gets back and we can't understand him.

Ted will be with us again on 11 November so we haven't got rid of him yet!!

Important Notice:
Central Gippsland Health Service (to comply with food safety guidelines) have issued an important notice advising that meals delivered hot must be consumed immediately and NOT reheated. This change has been brought about by the new food preparation and cooking process that has been implemented by the supplier of the meals. The change has been in place since the 17th March.
Please remember it is the responsibility of the first named person on each day to remind the other three of their obligation to meals-on-wheels. If you swap your day with another Club member please make sure that the first named person for that day is advised so that they are not chasing up the wrong people for the day. If you let the Bulletin Editor know far enough in advance the listing can be changed in the Bulletin. It is just the little things that make us look more professional to the community at large.
Similarly if you are rostered for a duty on a meeting night that you are unable to fulfil please arrange with another member to carry out that duty for you so that last minute crises are avoided.

Please note that our Club always welcomes partners and friends to all of our meetings to enjoy our company and fellowship.
